Bannination: are you experienced? Link is to a random thread I picked up off google. I personally have been banned from Slashdot [IP block really], Somethingawful and today I thought I was banned from Mefi due to a bug in the login script. [Got a Forbidden when trying to log in.]

So, any other haters out there?
nah, not here.

why banned from /.?

I got several IP blocks banned from slashdot in the late 90s thanks to my trusty trollbot script that increased the noise level immensely.

Now I don't think it was a very cool thing to do.

I got blocked from Slashdot for mod bombing someone. Someone I hated.

I got banned from SA, on purpose, by being a dick.

BANNED

I've been banned from Fark (spit) before for posting a vote bombing shell script.

Other than that, I just ignore rather than retaliate. Not worth getting worked up other. But I once threatened a teamkiller with physical violence on Battlefield 2. There's something about that game that brings out the inner arsehole in people.

Wait...all it takes to get banned on SA is being a dick? I thought they were all dicks!
posted by graventy 26 November | 17:27
Too true graventy but I out-shined them all with truly villainous dickishness and they got so jealous they had to get rid of me.

I've never been banned from any online fora. I guess that makes me a sissy or something.

I got banned from here once, but then I realised this place just wasn't the same without me so I reinstated myself.

I was once banned from a high school dance for a serious lapse in judgment.

In all my years on the net and the online services before, the only place I've ever been banned from was TV Without Pity. I said that the silver lining in the cloud that was a show's cancellation was that the mod, Strega, would no longer be recapping a show.

TWoP was ruled with an iron fist. Those mods were brutal. Did you happen to catch the big free-for-all when they announced the forums were closing? The last few days were completely mod-less and there were endless threads were people finally got to vent their frustration over how the boards had been run. I've never seen so many posts starting with "Um," in my life.
posted by LeeJay 26 November | 19:21
Er, sorry. That was when the Fametracker boards closed, but so many of the same people were involved.

Judging by your posts, I'm surprised you're not banned from the internets entirely.

What a wonderful thought Peak Oil. Truly, pure bliss.

Yeah, TVWoP is the most iron-fisted modding I've seen. Well, of the open type things. I think what's interesting about their heavy-handedness is that it makes the theads lean very heavily in the "announce" direction where people say what they are thinking, but they don't converse that much. The "don't talk about the boards on the boards" and the "don't generalize about people" together make having a conversation about things difficult because one of the most natural things to do in a thread is "It seems like most people didn't like this episode...". And the other thing that happens is that people become gun-shy and are very aware of whether or not they are on the mod's good side. And there's a lot of obsequiousness, too.

But I can stand most of the recappers who mod, it's really only Strega that invariably pisses me off. One thing that I think says a lot about her and why I hate her is that in her recaps of episodes, when she's quoting dialog, where any grammatical mistake are made she writes "[sic]".

Anyway, that banning was completely the result of my quip about Strega and the show that was canceled. It wasn't that I'd had warnings and this put me over the top—no, that one snark against her was instant bannination.

kmellis: it feels weird doesn't it. The degree of helplessness you experience is very humiliating.

I've been watching people getting banned from MeFi and feel a little twinge everytime.

I've been kick/banned from IRC channels a couple of times for stupid crap (in chans where nobody ever talks except to flame someone that asks a question), and I've been banned from two stores for shoplifting when I was a wee one. And I've banned myself from MetaTalk.

a couple of bars, maybe. but i doubt anyone would recognize me if i went back. i walked into a frou-frou bar on 4th street here in austin with fellow laser jocks and yelled 'IT'S FULL OF OLD PEOPLE IN HERE.'

I got kicked off of earthlink in the mid-90s for mailbombing a friend of mine. He thought it was pretty funny.

so...y'all don't keep one IP only for your trolling activities then? No, uh, neither do I.

A script meant to do something harmless went haywire and got my ip banned from a blog I never read anyway. On the other hand, I've bsnned a lot of people from my mailinglists over the years, does that count? :)

I've been 86'd from a bar in Manhattan and The Comet Tavern in Seattle. Most of the problem was that I was 19 and looked about 14 and had grossly misrepresentative fake ID's. Oh, and I was hanging out with drunken twits. That didn't help. I consider it a justitia aequatrix that I eventually became the one 86'ing drunken twits and busting under age drinkers.

I got barred from a bar-stroke-club once. Me and a friend wanted some late night drinking and we went to this place that was my local. The place was full of people but they weren't letting anyone else in for whatever reason, so I hatched a cunning plan to get us in: we would go around the back and knock on the fire exit doors until someone let us in. Pretty moronic eh?

Strangely enough it worked.

We went and got some drinks and were sitting there chatting for quite some time until we were suddenly surrounded by some very large neanderthals. Uh-oh, the bouncers had rumbled us.

So these bouncers get a bit over zealous and physically throw us out along with two other guys we've never seen before in our lives. They claimed that we were friends and that we must've called them up to let us in. Well bouncers don't get employed for their brains.

Anyway we started chatting to these guys and it turns out they hadn't even heard us knocking on the doors - one of the guys fancied a piss and decided to do it al fresco rather than use the indoor facilities. Well, he was Australian.

Anyway all four of us bought a huge crate of beers from a dodgy all-night off-license and went to my apartment to get even more slaughtered than we already were.

Reading this now I can't help but marvel at what an idiot I was. Jeesh...

Frisbee Girl: wow! 86'd from the Comet!

Oh, underage. That and fighting are about the only things that don't go down there.

I once got 86'd from a strip joint in Vancouver. I was getting laid off so the owner could give his idiot nephew my job. My boss wanted to make it up to me, so he took me up to Vancouver and got me absolutely shitfaced. I think we were in the second joint of the evening when he made me a stupid bet that I took him up on. The next thing I knew, a bouncer had me each arm and I went flying out the rear fire exit. My boss was distracted by the show and didn't notice I had vanished for about half an hour. Meanwhile I'm arguing with the bouncer at the door -- unsucessfully, needless to say. Finally my boss emerges and we went off to several other places until closing. Then we paid a cab driver to take us where we could pick up some Rye after hours. By that time, we were so destroyed we got lost for about two hours trying to find our way south to the U.S. Finally the sun rose and we could navigate again. Sheesh. That was back when Carter was president.
