24 November 2005

ex-pat non-thanksgiving, with wine. Well, I'm still feeling thankful, and I actually do feel that way most of the time, but today was kind of anti-thanksgiving, because:[More:]

1) not in U.S. Not with my family.

2) big, big film festival going on right now, here... and today's the first day of the big, big, blowout bracketed-weekend part of it... and my husband is in this industry, so it's definitely not even at all possible to have a private ex-pat celebration.

3) Also, since it's the big film festival, it means we have friends from Athens who have come, and are staying with us, which means that I've had to spend the whole day cleaning house... AND I HATE HOUSE-CLEANING. VERY.

4) VERY

5) But the upside is that I did a whole lot of nasty grunge cleaning that I would otherwise have put off for a million years, and the friends came, and they are delightful...

6) It's also nice that they have now all left for a midnight showing, so I am gloriously alone for four or five hours - at least. (Post-party big-time for them after the film).

plus...

7) There's still some wine left, and some cigarettes... So, all in all, I'm rather grateful - because that's pretty unusual.

So I guess I end up kind of giving thanks, even on my unthanksgiving.

Um... I also should add that I realize this is totally petty. - but it's much better than the post I was thinking of making yesterday, called "Petty Pre-Thanksgiving Whining". For reals! Be thankful.

Any evening with wine is a reason to be thankful for me :)

The film festival part sounds fascinating... will you get to go take part in any of that?

I celebrated thanksgiving last month, with friends. Destroyed a 750mL bottle of Irish =)

Buck up, at least it'll be even longer before you have to do grunge cleaning again.

Hm, can you get Jone's Turkey & Cranberry Soda where you are, locally?

{{taz}} Drink the wine, smoke a few, laugh with your friends and whine all you want. And it's not petty at all.

Despite my love for alcohol and my Mediterranean genealogy, I cannot stomach wine (bum wine like Cisco et al excepted). One time a woman next to me at abar was drinking a glass of burgundy and the smell got to me so much I had to leave. I'll stick to beer and whiskey.

Today at pips' family's thanksgiving the only booze in the house was a 4-pack of Guiness pint cans, and I was the only drinker in the house so that worked out well. Now I'm home with pickled sausage*, salty peanuts, Budweiser and you guys.

*I love pickled stuff, but oddly jars of pickled eggs are hard to come by in NYC. I've asked pips to pick me up some at the supermarked in CT.

A potential family nightmare scenario turned into an enjoyable dream. For what more could one ask?

Oops... So, almost immediately after posting this I thought I would lie down "for five minutes". I guess you can figure out how that turned out out.

*yawns, rubs eyes* Hey, where'd all that light come from, and where's the aspirin?

Here's the festival, boringpostcards. I'm not sure what I'll attend... Mr. taz worked (sound engineer) in three of the Greek films in the lineup.

I don't see them in the English language section - just some generic blah-blah that evidently hasn't changed since 2002, since it says something like "Greek cinema, blah blah, Greek directors, blah blah, 2002, blah blah."

I'll keep looking, maybe they're listed elsewhere.
