Who here be theatre geeks? Roll call of those who do various sundry things on stage, for whatever reason.
I acted for about ten years, and directed a couple of things, too. Bailed on school with two quarters to go. I then stage managed a bit (I actually had an Equity card at one point) and finally just got fed up with the whole thing.
I acted/produced/ran sound board/directed/sat on Board for a community theater group in a small town in New Mexico for about 7 years in the 80s. It was fun til I started getting paid for it.
Only thing that might be a bit interesting: this group is where Doogie got his start.
Retired geek here too, bmarkey. I was quite the theatre diva for many years. But at some point, it stopped being fun. I do miss being on stage occasionally, but I don't miss the rehearsals, the offstage drama and having my weekends booked up.
My directing class is doing a showcase and I've got an exerpt from 'Deep In A Dream Of You' by David Cale running. It'll be badass if my actors GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER.
When we were doing our showcase, one of the other directors was having a hell of a time with her cast. I was sitting nest to her on the last night of tech and asked her how she felt about her production. She looked at me, gave me a lopsided grin and said, "Well, I can't fix it - so it must be perfect."
That response got me through many a rough tech. I pass it on to you now.
directing major- UIDAHO.wut.
I've been doing techwork lately, and have the oh-so-common dream of getting back into directing.
Anybody want to start a theatre group in Seattle?
LES DO IT BABY!
I've taken a theatre break for about a year (gawd I needed it) but am about to start rehhearsal for a two week run of "Sordid Lives." For those of you familiar to that one, I'm Brother Boy. Obvious.
I did community theater for years. I was on stage crew in high school - my favorite thing was running the smoke machines, it made me feel powerful, I think.
Oh, and when I was a kid I went to a theater camp for three years in a great old theater in NJ. We would write a musical (I use the term "write" loosely; we pilfered a lot of material from plays and musicals) and perform it on the last might of camp.
