MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
What I don't get is that there was this period, up until one of yesterday's Halloween-in-November threads, where PP really was just being totally ignored. He'd make a crazy comment, and the thread would just move on. It was great! I miss it.
And I can understand why y2karl was so frustrated. It shouldn't be about the usernames, and people should be able to ignore the most obvious, least redeemable trolls. But hey, it ain't a perfect world.
Karl may mean well, but he needs to remember the posters in the threads don't run his life. If someone posts an aside of some sort, it's not as if that person has violated Karl's private residence.
A weblog may be one thing, but a community site is a bit over the top. I've seen this behavior quite a bit on USENET, and I'm glad Karl caught himself afterward. I think, however, MeFi's due for another spate of flareups. Too many individuals have a vested need to FPP, or to make a firkin out of a flyspeck in as far as debating someone else's points. These circles of internet aren't the entire universe, after all...
Um...y2karl has a serious family problem at the moment. Irrespective of everything/anything, it would be definitely in order to give the guy leeway, benefit of the doubt and constructive rather than negative feedback/response/input for the next while or so.
Methinks MeFites are relying too much on deletion and the hovering banhammer. There's something wrong at MeFi and nobody's been able to figure out a solution.
The underlying problem appears to be a group-think enforcement ethic getting tangled up with the lack of effective negative feedback and too many users trying to modify each other's behavior. Plus the usual keyboard commando pile-on bullshit.
Maybe Matt should occasionally declare a thread a banhammer-suspended free fire zone and let the agressive nerds make complete fools of themselves with a total flamewar shitfest. It would at least be amusing.
Come to think of it, it would be a perfect experiment to analyze the pathological tendencies. Then we could vote for who was the biggest asshole, stupidest comment, award prizes (like highlighting the lucky winners names in bright colors for a week, month, year, etc.) And, of course, Matt and Jess would have the ability to arbitrarily rig the vote count anyway they wanted.
I'm telling ya, the solution to all of this is a Mefi Meetup/Car Shoot. Old cars painted with things like, I don't know, Bush's face, gay marriage amendments, pictures of fat people, pictures of thin people, smokers' rights pamphlets, anti-smoking signs, pictures of war protestors, pictures of war supporters, etc will be rolled down the hill and everyone can shoot the shit out of 'em while screaming like madmen. We'll just keep shooting and screaming until everyone is spent.
It would be better to talk about this at metatalk; the thing is that people shouldn't be expected to have to check here constantly to see if they're being discussed.
As per usual, the "offending" comment has been deleted so there's no frame of reference and they apologized to each other. In the words of a famous web person, "Move along, nothing to see here..."

for my money, mathowie put his dick in the sausage grinder the very first time he 'sanitized' something. on that day he unwittingly committed to the execise of eternal vigilance coupled with flawless judgement. big mistake - he don't look much like Christ to me...
So what were the deleted comments? Not that it matters. Karl has posted a lot of great stuff (in-between his incessant newsfilter posts) and deserves the benefit of the doubt. It is surprising to see him forget that the poster doesn't own the thread, or have any special rights at all in shaping the discussion that follows.

Yeah, exactly. He made himself the dad to whom we all go running, tattling on Susie or Biff cause they didn't play nice. The flagging system reinforces the expectation that Matt will come in and distribute perfect justice.
"There are too many people dying these days." My sister said that as an offhand comment a couple of days ago. She was talking about people we know. The last two weeks have been bad ones.
I am going to agree wholeheartedly that censorship is bad in almost every case, except perhaps where you are deleting personal information that some nasty asshole posts about someone else, (address, real name). Putting yourself in that position also tends to have negative effects on your personality, generally.
I do think that in askme, it would be best if there was a collective decision to submit to some deletions (in the same sense that every time we have a staff meeting at work I have to spend some time saying "can we reign in the ADD a little and get this motherfucker done, please?") in the interest of keeping it useful. Which I think it is. Although I don't get much use out of it, but I find it fascinating.
I am still seriously ready to shoot up a car.
I'm so sorry to hear about Karl's brother.
Yeah, me too, that fucking sucks. Way too much dying going on. It offends me.
Maybe, in a time of stress like this, karl should hang out here rather than at the blue. Too many little vipers there who'll kick you when you're down. Fun trivialities might be just what the doctor ordered.
A former girlfriend told me about how when she was a kid in rural Montana, the boys used to pull up at night in dozens of cars to the edge of the landfill, and, holding guns, stand by the car with one hand on the headlight switch. On a signal they'd all turn on their headlights on at once and start blowing away the rats that scurried for cover.
Is there some metaphorical equivalent we could do on MeFi?
Man if a viper tried to kick me I'd just stand there and laugh and laugh and be all "You ain't got no legs you stupid snake, come back and try to kick me in about 8 million years when the evolution kicks in, or send one of your lizard homeboys."
Then I'd shit myself because snakes give me the creepin' jimjams.
That having been said, there is many a down kicking viper on that site for sure.
warbaby -- thanks for calling out those militias. Fuck that pisses me off. If Canada had any decent planes I'd say we strafe the fuckers, peacefully, with petals and bonbons.
(Bunch of fucking wannabe slobbish jibbering mewling and puking prickholas crawling like chubby termites from a rotten trailer park. FUCK THEM)
This is what I get for working in the kitchen on my Pre-Thanksgiving stuff...a big, fat ??????
So here is what I know. y2Karl makes a post on pre-Iraq war intelligence and then someone ? makes a nasty remark about karl's name? and karl says something nasty? and ?
OK I have to go cut up the rye and pumpernickle bread for the stuffing.

No, kidding. I never saw this thread until now. Man, what a pack of gossips.
It's so unusual for Y2Kook to get personal. Like this silly pissing match.
If you look at that thread, the person who starts calling names is you. Which you have done since with me twice now --first in the blue and now here. In threads where I have made no comment at that--you got a grudge going on there. But have I ever said anything about you since that thread you linked ? No.
But I'm still buying Karl a drink when we meet.
You want to talk trash about me behind my back and you want to buy me a drink, too ? I don't think so.
