Remember when tulips bulbs were so highly prized that they were worth more than currency in Holland? No? Neither do I.

Actually iconomy......I was looking at tulip manuscripts ... can't remember what they were called exactly...from the 1700s I think.

They worked out that the illustrations of the best ones would cost something in the order of $10Million in today's money, they were so highly prized.

Or was it poppy..um? (but the rest is true...there's a special name - 'tulip books' or 'poppy books' don't ring a bell, but it was logical, if Dutch; except for the money)

The Tulip Bubble and also here. This story has always fascinated me - there's a painting at the Walters in Baltimore showing lines of Dutch soldiers protecting the tulip fields. The big tattoo on my leg is from a 17th century Dutch botanical; it's one of the tulip bubble tulips.

I meant that I don't remember it (first-hand) because I'm not that old...hee.

But I'm almost that old!

Do you have a link to the manuscripts, peacay? I'd love to look at them. Tulips are my most favorite flower.

I knew you would ask that...umm...I'll have a little looksee.

Ooh they're charming. They would make wonderful postcards, printed out on ivory parchment cardstock.

The funniest thing about the Tulip craze was that the most prized tulips - Rembrandts, looked that way only becuase they were dying. Heh.

Sheesh, weretable! If you wanna get rich, saffron is where it's at!

I bought some saffron crocus bulbs this fall, but considering that you need about 2000 for one ounce of the spice, um.
