Last.fm down? Does anybody know what's up with that? :(
They've frequently been down for shorter periods. Last week there was an overnight outage, though, and it was repeated for a shorter time the next night. One of the moderators said that some new equipment was due soon, so maybe they've taken the site down for an upgrade.
Personally, I think they should have a fallback -- status page, whatever. On the other hand, since I don't pay at the moment, I don't feel entitled to complain too loudly. ;-)
By the way, the web server is completely separate from the Audioscrobbler profile database clusters. Anything you listen to is being recorded and will show up in your stats. My audioscrobbler plug-in has logged successful submissions all day long.
By the way, the only way to ever find out what's going on is to go to the forum (link on the upper right of your user screen) and read the Web Site Support topic. There's always a System Status message there (currently).
recent last.fm problems made me look elsewhere for music. turns out that bbc has a radio station called bbc6 that's not bad. much more english-centric than last.fm or kexp, and not really as hip, i suspect, but worth a listen for a bit of variety. http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/
(actually I listened to ? and the Mysterians last night so I could join too)
I think the band I listened to that had an ! in the name was OK Go! or something like that, but I could be mistaken. I could check, but last.fm's down again...grrrr.
The funniest group I've stumbled across so far is the group for people whose #1 most listented to band is not Radiohead. They're very proud of not having Radiohead as their #1. But when you look at the stats of the members, Radiohead is #2 on almost every single one...hee. And if you read some of their remarks in their forum, they're all arguing about what exactly the rules to belong to the group are, and how many times you can listen to Radiohead, and all that. It's funny, but it's not meant to be funny. And the person who started the forum is threatening to kick other people out if they listen to too much Radiohead.
Can you imagine the shame of being kicked out of a last.fm listener group?
are you trying it without the "www", ico? It's been working for me... until just now, anyway, when the player just died on oh, the irony! Karma Police. Radiohead.
I thought Radioheads Not Our Top Artist was a little more lighthearted about the whole thing -- basically it was a joke (back in February) because Radiohead is so frequently the top artist of Last.FM users, and the top artist on Last.FM overall. Once the group got a serious number of members, though, irony hit as the aggregate #1 favorite for the group was .... Radiohead.
Lately they seem to have gotten some serious Radiohead-hatas. I think that's too bad.
My favorite oddball group is Monkeys -- which is for people who are fans of bands who have written songs about monkeys. He's got a whole list of the songs, too (I helped with a few).
Oh, the kick function has been there for a long time. People got sick of having so-so country fans "pollute" groups like Real Country, for instance, with rock and hip-hop. Me, I go to Last.FM for the variety, and there's always the skip button.
why does radiohead come out so high? afaik, i don't vote for them (i don't mind them, but they kind of bug me and i own little of their music), yet it's my personal #1. is it (the #1 spot) simply the most-played song, rather than the one that receives most votes? i'm sure when i started the list was just what i voted for, but then they updated the site...
