Ask MeCha: What IS this, anyway? When mudpuppie and I met up in Berkeley a few weeks ago for lunch, cheese shopping and general poking about, we came across this item. Does anyone have an idea what it is or might be?
Giant sausage

Thanks, bunnies, you're all the best and the cutest and smartest and you just make my tail wag like nothing else.

dano, it was a sort of Berkeley version of a cleaned up junkyard, really. Full of everything imaginable pulled from houses, from furniture to appliances and doorknobs and basic hardware. The 'Big ol centrifuge' a few pics down is from the same place, for example. Outside there was an area for old bathtubs and fencing and lawnmowers and their bits. I don't remember the name, but it's in an industrial area of the town. 'pup would know, but she's in Chicago. Hrm.

A fish or crustacean trap could make sense, though.

Was that at the "Urban Ore" Frisbee Girl? I useta love going there when I lived in Napa.

You lived in Napa? That must have been beautiful.

Urban Ore sounds familiar, but I dodn't have much physical reference. It was across the service alley/street or so from a pretty awesome warehouse that had all kinds of wood in odd sizes and shapes.

Birdhouse for the rare penisbird?

A fish trap seems reasonable, but I'd want to look at the bottom of it first. Was the bottom open? The angled-in part could be meant to keep the fish in the trap.

Otherwise I have NO idea.

(am also trying to suppress jealousy that San Antonio is turning into McTouristLand (tm) and so you have to drive waaaaay out of town to do any good antique/junk hunts)

Oh, Frisbee Girl, I think the official name for such places is "architectural salvage yard." Lots of people go to such places for interesting bits and pieces when they're remodeling or building a house.

I think.
posted by mihail 21 November | 19:27
It seems like it could be a fish trap, but those are usually a little stouter. Considering that it's far slimmer and longer than the usual, it might be an eel trap, but I couldn't make out if the basket-like structure at what is the "bottom" is open or not. Oh, and Fris is teh hawt. Will commence licking on request.

Oh, I know! I know! It's one of those things that you use when you're doing that stuff, you know? Like when you need to put in one of those things you get at that place where they have that stuff? It's one of those.

Hope that helps.
