Signifyin' Monkey! A great dirty 60's R&B song about a primate for your sunday morning listening.
I hadn't heard this version, but I have heard about five others. I took a class on rap and african-american culture, and the prof whipped through a bunch of different signifying monkey tracks, including a 12-minute one that was pretty great, but I can't seem to find now.
I have been looking all over for a version of the Signifyin' Monekey ditty that I heard back in the late 60's or early 70's and was hoping that you or members the other members could help me out.
The song, though I'm not positive of it as being set to music, was more of a rhyme but with a definite rhythm.
The version posted by jonmc is pretty close as is one by Willy Dixon from iTunes - but not quite what I remember...
It started out:
"Down in the jungle where the coconuts grow
there's the "sig na fide est" monkey that the world ever knowed."
It went on and the next part I remember was something like:
"No admission, pay at the door. Pull up a chair and sit on the floor."
It was spoken pretty fast, but not sung - almost a rap had such been around at that time.
If anyone has it or even the lyrics I would love to get them!
