The Democrats he beat in the primary were schmucky precursors to the kind of Democrats that are all too prevalent in 2005. Fieger never had a shot in hell of winning, but at least he tried to make something out of the loss.

I live in the west part of the state, which is solidly, reliably republican, and during that election I could not count the number of people I spoke with who wished for someone besides Fieger to vote for on the Dem side so they wouldn't have to vote for Engler. I admit my experiences were not definitive; I don't remember how Engler polled statewide at that time.
