devendra banhart i just heard this guy singing santa maria de <something> on the bbc's late junction (second track in, thursday's show, available here) and found it stunningly beautiful (it helped that he speaks spanish so slowly and clearly that i could understand every word).[More:] anyway: googled for his name and found the site above; listened to the track there and am pretty sure i heard it recently on the mecha audioscrobbler last.fm thing.

so, am i just way behind the curve? is he terribly famous already? probably so. but if not, please enjoy. and if anyone has a direct link to "santa maria de feria", please post...
oh, sorry. some of that should have gone inside.

Though, not the song you're looking for, you can download two of his songs from Amazon. A bit of background on him there, as well.

ooo thanks - didn't know they had free downloads for full songs.

the track quatermass is calling "pensando en ti" is the track i hread of the bbc... thanks! :o)

Pensando cada dia, cada hora
Pensando en ti
Caminando, mi sesta llena de moras
Son para ti
Temprano por la tarde y por la noche
Sueño de ti

thinking every day, every hour
thinking of you
walking, my basket(?) full of blackberries,
they're for you
morning afternoon and night,
i dream of you

Lalalala

Comiendo pera
En santa maria de la feira
Que placer ir
La gente buena
Solo gozan nunca hay pena
Pa' que sufrir
Jugando en el mar, en la arena
Viviendo haci

eating pears
in santa maria de la feira
what a pleasure to go there
the good people
enjoy themselves, never sadness
to suffer
playing in the sea, in the sand
living so

Lalalala

Ventana blanca
Hay que venga la mañana
Hay que venga otra vez
Esperando
Asi es como yo paso mi tiempo
Esperando a Inaniel
Y rezando por su calor, por su aliento
Sobre mi piel

white window,
until tomorrow,
until next time,
waiting
is how i pass my time
waiting for inaniel,
and praying for her warmth, for her breath
on my skin

Te digo todo aqui va bien
Conmigo de no dormir
Amigo, te lo suplico, te lo pido
Que me ayudes a mi, a mi

i tell you everything here is ok
with me, without sleeping
friend, i beg you, i ask you
that you help me

Buscando
Con mi ancla en la marea
Nadando en ti
Yo voy andando
Oyeme, te estoy llamando
Te amo a ti

searching
with my anchor in the sea,
swimming in you
i go walking
listen to me, i'm calling you
i love you

Por el valle me encontré un rio escondido
Me recuerdo, hacía calor pero tenia frio
Me iba a morir

in the valley i found a hidden river
i remember, it was hot but i was cold
i was going to die

Bianca
Ay Paloma, ay Angelina
Por fin te vi
Por fin te vi
Por fin te vi

bianca
my dove, my angel,
at last i see you

andrew, thanks much for the translation; I'm a big fan. As an addition to Quartermass's great list, here's another song of his that kills me: Autumn's Child.

I see your Autumn's Child and raise you A Ribbon. (my two faves from Devendra)

You might also like cocoRosie. They appeal to the same people I think.
