Well, we are the LAST state in New England to pass one of these. And there are still a lot of people like these crazy motherfuckers up here.
But today is a good day. And I'm mightily impressed that we managed to pick up something like 12% from 2000 to 2005. Hopefully that reflects a change in attitudes and not just a better run campaign.
It's all relative, selfnoise. Those crazy motherfuckers are the bulk of the population in many places. And you may be the last in New England, but there are dozens of other states that are years away from even considering such a thing.
(Plus some of the coolest people I know live in Portland.)
I live in the one texas county that voted against prop. 2, so we're all pretty disappointed here. This morning, the hubby asked if I was "ready to leave" yet. I am still thinking about it.
I was crushed when even my little blue county here in Georgia voted for our new "fuck you gay people" constitutional amendment in 2004. I've never quite gotten over it, and my partner and I worry what legal problems this is gonna give us when we approach retirement and all that.
We have wills and power of attorney and all that good stuff, but all it takes is one bumpkin judge to say, "Sorry, guys, that's too much like marriage, and y'all can't have that!" to really mess us up.
I'm shocked, saddened and ready to leave Texas because of the sheer volume of support our "Fuck You Faggots" constitutional amendment got. 76%. 3/4 of the voters in this state are willing to discriminate against a huge percentage of my friends...and not only are they willing...they got that bigotry legalized. In.fucking.sane.
I've been ready to leave Texas for a long time, cause this place just isn't the place it was 25 years ago. I don't know if it was all the people moving South that changed it, or if the bigots and ignorant rednecks just suddenly took a Tony Robbins class and became empowered, or what...but this place has turned into a caricature...a 3d, live action, neocon, cross toting, sheet wearing, caricature.
I gotta find a nice Blue State or the mothership in Vancouver, or something. It's hot, it's bug infested, and now intolerance is the law. I can't hang with this. 76%. Seventy.fucking.six.percent! W.T.F.
I'm also saddened but not at all shocked by Texas' overwhelming support of the "Smear the Queer" amendment, and at this point the only thing keeping me from ditching this state for good is poverty. Still, there's some solace to be had at the thought that, because of its poor wording, the amendment actually invalidates all forms of marriage. (I still haven't broken the news to my parents.) It's like that guy once said: He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
