Anyone else still feeling traumatized by this? [More:]Dear jesus, why did I click on the link? And why did I then spend the better part of the day looking through hideous skin diseases online? At least I will never complain about a zit ever, ever, ever again. In the meantime, I am pretty sure I won't sleep for eight days.
Good Lord. It looks like they're cultivating oysters. I once spent an evening clicking around skin disease sites and thanking my lucky freakin' stars I am relatively healthy.

You guys can't make me click the link.

*repeats to self: they can't make me click, they can't make me click.*

stay strong, taz! I'm not usually squeamish, but this has seriously freaked my shit right out. honestly, it's worse than I could possibly have ever imagnined in my most hideous nightmares. nurse, get me some brain bleach -- stat! This vodka isn't doing the trick!

Oh me too, taz. My work has brought me in contact with lots of gruesome medical photos (including skin deformations), but something about the way this is being described is telling me to back up, slowly, while compulsively crossing myself. And I'm not even Catholic.

*whispers to the amnesia gods to send their healing vodka rays down on poor scody's head*

*staggers drunkenly over to melissa may; hugs; weeps*

*also: swears off oysters*

*embraces and bucks up dear scody; further prescribes Halle Berry/Milla Jovovich visualizations*

I never thought I'd be so grateful to be reminded of Halle Barry and her sixth toe, but that moment has arrived!
posted by scody 09 November | 02:48
Halle Berry has a sixth toe? That's just kind of life-affirming. I'm delighted to know that complete perfection is not yet attainable for mortals. Or maybe having a sixth toe is more perfect than a mere five? Now I'm confused.

there is no fucking way in the world that you can make me click that link, girlfriend

But oysters are simply delicious with vodka.

*runs away*

Halle's Six Berries. I, too, find comfort in the imperfections of the beautiful people.

*throws half-empty Ketel bottle at LeeJay; retrieves it*

don't do it, matteo! I will need you to visit me in the insane asylum, bringing news of Paul Weller while I am reduced to a gibbering mess.

*thinks scody has the right idea, and either conversely or complimentary, is grateful for the turn-off that keeps her from eating more holloween candy.*

I am still traumatized after clicking the link here and not having seen it earlier today.

oh man.

*perks up* candy?

okay, ugh... off to (attempt) sleep. Perhaps if we all concentrate very strongy on fluffy bunnies in fields of daisies, we can override brain-searing images of the necrotizing-oyster-horror-flesh!

In the meantime, i'm going to pull a Shane McGowan and keep my liquor bottle tucked under my arm, like a beloved pet, all night long.

oh man after reading all the comments now i am really curious to see it. lichen? barnacles? oysters? nauseatingly surreal? vomit/trauma-inducing?

trying... not... to... click...

Let's stop talking about this, please.
posted by greasy_skillet 09 November | 05:37
reminds me of those fungal growths on tree boles back home in Indiana. I wonder how they got on someone's hands though...
posted by sciurus 09 November | 06:51
I'm not going there, Worked for a dermatologist for a while.. 'nuff said.

I'm sad for the disfigured. We feel compassion, but there's an underlying squick that can't be denied, even when observing with the most clinical eye.

:(

That makes me hungry!

I clicked the link. The image stayed with me for the rest of the day. Not for the more touchy of you.

If I were this person I would pull my hands out of the briny depths every now and then so that the oysters would not get a chance to grow so big.

I wonder what the diagnosis actually is.

posted by sarah connor 09 November | 09:28
Yeah, it's mega-gross. When I was a child my parents cleaned a pediatrician's office on the weekends for spare money to support my comic book and action figure habits. I would accompany them and spend hours looking through the Dr.'s books and manuals, gazing at pictures of the disfigured and damaged. I dunno if it made me numb or dangerous.

oh shit.

why did I click that.

the fact that something like that can happen to you and not kill you is evidence of the cruelty of nature.

nasty!
posted by Mrs.Pants 09 November | 10:44
Holy D-A-M-N. I like nastiness as much as the next guy but this is full on. It's freaky because A) It's so gross and B) The poor soul suffering from this affliction hasn't been able to get help, just meet a nice photographer.

I saw that yesterday and still I had to click it again. I am a sick individual and I have no one to blame but myself.

Halle Berry has six toes?! Wicked! taz, I think it's something we're supposed to strive for.
*wonders how to grow another toe*
posted by deborah 09 November | 11:42
Not gonna click! I'm no delicate flower, but skin diseases and eye ailments are too damn much for me.

I had missed the thread, but thanks to you, I'm now traumatized. Thanks!

I don't think that's a sixth toe - I think it's the worlds worst bunion. I don't know which one is squickier...
posted by muddgirl 09 November | 15:12
Looks like that "bunion" has a toenail.
