Election day!! [More:]I may have mentioned this before, but growing up, our local polling place was my basement. Every election day, our yard was full of local politicians and friendly neighbors. It was a party.

Now, it's at the local firehouse and they let my kid check out the firetrucks.

I love election day! Don't forget to vote!
I love voting in New York, where we still have the ka-chunk lever machines. I dread the day the state gets its act together and "updates" the machines. It isn't real voting if it doesn't go ka-CHUNK.

Also, election day is making me kinda sad today, too. Stupid Bloomberg voters. They should all be exiled to Staten Island and the far reaches of Queens.

The Cleveland Mayoral Race is one of the lamest things I've ever seen. apparently my councilman has a condor though, which is sweet.

*ka-Chunk* Ya hear that? That's the sound of Democracy.

So true about the machines also if possible always vote in the gym of a public school, then your vote counts for double.

Sadly, Damela, the alternative to Bloomberg is a ward heeling douchenozzle of the first order, he called in his favors gets his pathetic run and we get to wait through another Bloomberg "New York is for the Ultra-rich" term. I just skipped voting for mayor and did a paper ballot so I could vote for the nice Green party hippie who is running for Brooklyn Bourough President against Shitheel Markowitz. She lives on my block and gave me a donut, which makes her the best kind of hippie.

Not only does he have a condor... but his condor is undeniable. Wow.

You know, Wino, I thought that at first. But then I saw that Bloomberg spent eight times more than Ferrer. Also, Ferrer actually has good-ish policies. So I don't know that I just want to blame the Democratic organization.

All of that doesn't really matter though. Even the best efforts of the CIA, Rumsfeld and Gonzalez could not convince me to vote for Bloomie. Because he is bad for New York. And most of all I hate all those assholes who pretend like they're all liberal and would never even speak to someone who voted for Bush, blah blah blah, but who don't have the courage of their convictions where it matters most (Park Slope, UWS, I'm lookin' at you). I mean, vote for the Green Party if you hate the Dem. But voting for Bloomberg is craven.

Anyway, I'm most excited to vote for Gloria Mattera.

I know about Ferrer from way back, his policies are one thing, but he is beholden and crooked, in the most slimy New York Democrat way (please to remember that New York local politics, like Chicago and Boston, are one party dominated, everyone was/is a democrat, so their stance or avowed policies are a useless yardstick since everything is based on favors and influence). I would never vote for Bloomburg or any other modern Republican (well perhaps under a set of circumstances so convoluted as to be practically impossible). I also hate the closeted Bloomberg voter, but in this race I would rather not vote for mayor than vote for Ferrer, my logic being that since Mike is going to win by a landslide a vote for Ferrer indicates only that I am making a reflex democratic vote, since I hate Ferrer and think he would be a worse mayor than Bloomie (for different reasons) I'm just not voting (for Mayor). Bloomberg is terrible for the New York that I love, but rather good for the New York that exists right now.

I also wouldn't sleep on the "younger, edgier" neighborhoods in terms of voting for Bloomeberg, voting booths have curtains after all.

I know. But I feel like people here either don't pretend to be uber-liberal or if they do they wouldn't vote for him. That kind of hypocrisy has always struck me as coming with age.

Dude, that's utterly respectable.

Yup. I could fill a book with examples of the horrors of the rich yuppie liberals of Park Slope and their accesory children and smug noblesse oblige racism and knee jerk dinner party politics. The manuscript of that book would be so spattered with ragevomit as to be totally illegible, so I'll just skip it. Gloria Mattera gave me a donut though and her house is so crammed with books that she has to stack them in her hallway, so really she's perfect.

*kisses the Wino*

Coincidentally, Kiss the Wino is the new carnival game I've been trying to bring to market. Sucessfully kiss the wino and get an eco-safe totally organic fair trade stuffed snake with mirrors for eyes made by quaint peasants in Chiapas who don't want plumbing and televisions because it fucks with their authenticity high.

Hoo Boy! Here in Garner we are voting on a new mayor. We are deciding between a middle-age, Baptist white guy who belongs to the Shriners and a middle age, Baptist white guy who belongs to the Rotarians. I can tell you I'm on tenterhooks.

I voted against the Anti-Gay-Marriage amendment in Texas this morning. Felt good to wave my little fist at the bigots.

I wish we had some kind of sexy issue, but it was just a township supervisor and school board election. I'm sure my votes won't count for crap as I live in a bible-belty republican stronghold.

In fact, the real estate agent who represented the sellers of the house we now live in was there. I remember when we made settlement. We had this exchange:

Agent: "I usually work the polls, so maybe I'll see you there, hopefully. Do you vote?"
Me: "Every election."
Agent: "That's good to hear! Republican?"
Me: "No."
Agent: "Oh. Well then I hope I DON'T see you."

I nearly clocked the bitch. When I saw her today, we both pretended not to know each other.

Here in Arkansas, I get to vote for a public library levy. As the library in question is my employer, it feels especially sweet.

So who's winning in VA and NJ?
posted by box 08 November | 16:38
Neither VA nor NJ do exit polls, but Corzine is largely expected to win NJ. VA is too close to call (I'll be grudgingly casting a vote for Tim Kaine in a n hour or so).

I'm not feeling well enough to go out and vote, which is just as well, since like the Wino, I have nothing but strong distaste for either candidate in the NYC mayoral race.

I suppose I should be thankful that I don't live in Jersey (even though I've had to suffer through the ads on tri-state TV). The relentless mudslinging from both sides in that campaign is one of the major reasons that there's such a malaise towards politics in this country, IMHO.

Yet, again, my man the Wino manages to articulate in one sentence what I've spent years trying to get across on the Filter.

Hey Jon,
I'm listening to Wayne Kramer & The Pink Fairies, I won't say in honor of you, but certainly with you in mind. Also hey do you have a 18 track Dictators thing called Demos and Rare Tracks (possibly) Cause if not, I got a present for you.

No I don't. And thanks.

I'm just sitting here killing time before my next vicodin dose. I finally changed the wound dressing last night and was stunned at how small the incision was. Was still hellish for the first night after the operation though, especially the existential oddness of watching fluid drain out a (big) hose in your back.
