I LOVE IT when i'm on vacation during an exciting time!
(this'll be the Paris update thread==more inside) : >
It's Sunday, 5am here in Paris...got in fine, and the apt's adorable. Tanya's a sweetheart, and we spent part of yesterday together==went shopping around the neighborhood (by Republique and Oberkampf), and i took her for lunch at a great creperie--Chez Imogene--one of her regular places. I had a crepe "rouge and blanc" (blood pudding, tomato puree & potatoes)--but delish! and a dessert crepe of caramel sauce & glace vanille. Then I thanked her again and went off to the Maison Europeanne du Photographie--small but excellent, with a big, excellent show of Miguel Rio Branco's work-really great stuff. Then I came back to nap for a few hours, went barhopping for a few hours, et voila!!! so i woke up too early and here i am--she left me her laptop which is good bec she doesn't have a tv.
No riots downtown at all, but yesterday am coming in from the airport--at one point we all smelled smoke but didnt see anything--i just read they're spreading all over the country.
I'm meeting cleardawn at 11:30 in Montmartre for lunch and stuff...more later.
(This thread will be the perm travelogue thread) : >
Have a good time, amberglow! I'm extremely jealous. I once spent an evening in Paris and I've been dying to go back ever since. And what jrossi4r said. :/
But why are people protesting the arrival of amberglow in France?
My reputation precedes me? ; >
Just got back in from spending the afternoon with cleardawn--very sweet guy--we met in Montmartre (and walked by where they filmed Amelie-the vegetable place and the restaurant she worked in--it was really crowded), and made our way downtown to the Louvre (we'd both been before but it's free the 1st Sun of the month), stopping off for lunch (steak frites for moi, big salad for him with some goatcheese/hardboiled egg thing on top)--Louvre was mobbed and fun--we talked politics and stuff and about mefi as we wandered (that whole MeTa about his I/P post really put him off it, sadly), etc--then we walked some more; and saw a big rollerblader thing (the cops escorting them were rollerblading too)--it's a weekly thing they do. Winged Victory says hi to you all, and Venus de Milo waved also. ; >
This am before i met cleardawn i wandered around Canal St. Martin--beautiful area. It was perfect weather today--sunny and high 50s--colder and windier up on Montmartre tho. We're going to meet for dinner Thurs night i think, also.
I'm going out later, so will say au revoir so i can iron and make myself belle pour les hommes. (it's such a pleasure staying in an apt. instead of a hotel room)
don't worry--i forgot to mention-- they torched some cars on Place de Republique last night--a block from where i am--but i was either out or they were quiet about it--i never heard or smelled anything at all.
Bonjour! (it's 9:30 Mon--totally hungover c'est soir--i wish she had a tv)
this is where the cars were torched in Paris Sat.nt: rue Charles-Francois Dupuis PARIS-03EME
Copy that and paste it into here where it says depart/plan du quartier and click Plan du Quartier. Then click on the right edge of the map to nudge it east, and you'll see my st--Rue Rampon.
Today i'm thinking Pompidou for the big Dada show, and then le shopping, and maybe Palais de Tokyo (big contemporary art space). : >
no pics--i stopped bringing a camera with me on vacation ages ago...
bonjour mon petit chers! it's 10:30am Tues here and i'm going to Chartres this afternoon. : >
Since i last updated you--spent the whole day at Pompidou--incredibly wonderful and thorough Dada show--got the catalogue--and then le shopping at Zara (3 turtlenecks - black, grey, and purple and a blk corduroy shirt), and then some window shopping... last night i bar hopped and met 2 brits so we hung out--one of them is an author-- Phillip Hensher-- have any of you heard of him? nice guys...drank too much tho. : >
no riots or any sign of anything out of the ordinary at all here. i notice fewer Americans this trip tho, and more Spaniards (or it could be i'm noticing them more because of work). Grey day early yesterday, but it cleared up just for moi, of course.
Guess who was shopping in Colette the same time i was??? Go on, guess! (famous, just lost a lot of weight, designs clothes...)
Yup-- Karl Lagerfeld -- he is absolutely hideous in real life -- totally uggo face, and he's only like 5'6" -- and that stupid standup collar he wears -- ugh!!! all the sales people were all excited in a suave way, and none of the other customers were at all. Did i mention how ugly he was? ; >
So, since i last wrote: I went to Chartres yesterday in the afternoon--stunning - the stained glass is out of this world beautiful..if any of you go, go in the afternoon and stay thru sunset -- gorgeous!!! It took an hour each way on the train, and they never looked at the tickets, so i can still do 2 daytrips if i want (not that i have the time of course)
Last night i went out for a little while-- i was tired from Chartres so didn't stay out late. Today i went to the Palais de Tokyo -- great contemporary stuff -- and then walked along the rue St. Honore (where all the designer stuff is), and went to Colette -- 10 Corso Como in Milan is much better i think -- i wasn't impressed at all. I did buy a little bunny there tho -- i saw it and thought of you guys : >
It was raining in the am and colder today, but cleared up this afternoon. Went food shopping on my way home (monoprix and boulangerie), and am going to make dinner now -- a demain mon cheres!
Yesterday i went to the Vienna show at the Grand Palais --excellent but way way too crowded, and wandered around St. Germain and went to Pierre Herme (fab chocolates and pastries). Met cleardawn last night and we went to Chartier--fun! Then i went barhopping with 2 guys from Boston i had met the night before...woke up hungover, and went to Musee Jaquemarte Andre--beautiful old mansion full of art and stuff, and then shopping all the rest of the day--it's a holiday here today and everyone was off. Bought a fall coat and another sweater at Zara, and looked everywhere else. Tonight i'm meeting the Boston guys at 10ish, and maybe cleardawn for dinner again before....i come home tomorrow night--booooooooooo
