How long does a person wait for Flickr? It's not a big deal, but I started using my Flickr account, and still am not showing up in the Metachat and Metafilter_users section.[More:]

Anyone know if it takes many days? weeks?

It took a long time for me to decide to do the pic upload (I had trouble with a 'net stalker a few years ago), but now that I've decided, I keep checking to see if I'm "in" yet. =)
I obviously don't know how to post to Metachat. If one of the mods wants to move some of the above text inside the thread, that'd be swell. I'll try harder next time.

reflecked, it started almost immediately for me, but I joined several months ago. I don't know what may have changed, especially after Yahoo took them over. One thing that's been commented on in a number of places is that you often need to refresh several times before you show up in some tag pools.

Oh, and hey, care to share your link?

hey reflecked,
I had the same problem. I uploaded a few pics, and I never got in, so after about a month I uploaded a bunch of vacation pictures (around 20), and a few days later I was accepted. In other words, I think it depends more on the number of pictures you upload.

I have a pic, a pic of a basket, and *blush* 6 pieces of my amateur digiart (trying to get SOME content there).

20? wow.. I don't "do" photography. :D I do have a many more feeble attempts at learning Photoshop.. but.. sweet sufferin' sucksatphotoshop, that would be cruel.

I'm sure I did the tags correctly on my Flickr page.

heh.. and I have refreshed. Oh how I've refreshed... obsessively, frequently.

You look exactly how I imagined. That's totally awesome. I cannot help you with Flickr, though.

Ok, I'm a little confused. Isn't the correct procedure A) join the Metachat "group" and then B) send individual images to said group using the "send to group" button?

If you do that, they should show up in the appropriate groups immediately.

Not that I've sent any images to the Metachat group (I don't have any self-portraits up) but I think that'll work for you.

Love your artwork, reflecked!

lol@ dame. *giggle* heh.. That's the result of the goggles I embed in every post.

hmmm selfnoise.. I read a load of FAQ, but missed seeing anything like that. I'm grateful for your guidance. *sigh* .. back to Flickr Central.

thx, Frisbee Girl. I know how the difference between what i want to do and what actually happens, but I appreciate a kind eye.

reflecked: this is the page that explains adding a photo.

Hope that helps.

You're purty.
So's your art. :-)

I never noticed this about Flickr. Your picture should show up in the list of all public photos with the tag "metachat," regardless of whether or not you sent it to the metachat group.

This looks like a Flickr bug to me. I don't remember anything like this happening when I joined, but I don't know that I would have noticed, as I didn't use tags very much at first.

My photos whent public in just a couple days.

dems some trippy photos.

It took me a couple of weeks and probably 40 or more uploaded photos before my pics started showing up in the public areas. I think they do this to deter spam/porn type posts. I believe every new account is validated by a human, so it probably depends on workload and such.

Your artwork is FANTASTIC, btw!!

Note, though, that posting it there may slow you down from getting your photostream in the public areas... Flickr heavily favors photography over other types of images, in my experience.

I've added you as a contact, BTW, so don't think it's a stalker dude- just me. :)

I'm wrong and boringpostcards is correct.

See this (check out FAQ #5).

So you are waiting for some human being to review your stream and make sure it's kosher. And they say uploading more public photos will speed things up. Unless they mistakenly put you in the NIPSA group.

Who knew? Everyone but me, apparently. ;-)

Well, my photos were uploaded in August and showed up in the metachat stuff shortly thereafter. I added the metafilteruser tag about 48 hour ago and they're still not showing up there.

I had an account for ages but only uploaded some art stuff... and I guess I was never approved. Then when I started uploading photos, it still didn't get approved, so I contacted them (somewhere among the "help" info is a link I'm too lazy to look up), and asked them to review my account so my tags could start showing up, and I was approved the next day.

I just joined, and I'm in. I still hate Flickr and Yahoo, though.

Also... me, too - love the art!

***Joining the Metachat group, then sendiing the photo to the group****

worked almost immediately. THANK YOU.

I think I'm a NIPSA, and that's ok. There'll never be many photos from my account; it's a weird-ish hangup, but cameras just aren't part of my life.

Thanks for the compliments on my art attempts. Learning to push pixels around instead of paint HAS been very humbling.

"purdy" is my parent's fault. I can't take credit unless I pretend to believe I chose them while lurking at Bardo Grand Central. =)

thanks boringpostcards for telling me who you are, since your Flickr name is diff; you're right, I might have been uncomfortable. I'll try to suss "contacts" later; I haven't added anyone yet.

rumple.. Coast Salish, but all the westcoast tribes used cedar and spruce root, and all water/dirt proof containers use the same "z" twist to the bark in the weaving.

I still haven't figured out the metafilter_user part. I joined the Metafilter group, and tagged the pic properly, but there's no metafilter_user subgroup to send a pic to (that I can see).

again.. Thank you all, for help, encouragement and for not laughing at me as I stumble through this.

hmmmm

and grrrr?

Last night, the photo I sent to Metachat group was there, and had a little yellow "new" flag. Now it's not there. I've been rejected.

*dejected*

double dagnab it!

;-)

Yeah, as most people have implied if not outright indicated, uploading art mostly and especially first will almost always (but not always always) get you a direct line to the NIPSA. The key is to start your account, upload a few actual photos (more than 5), go public, and then proceed with your uploads.

Or, if you're like me you get NIPSA'd right away for uploading a screenshot of your desktop and then do nothing with your account for months, until you upload mail swap art, and then wonder why you're not showing up. heh.

Eventually, I just wrote them (after much prompting from jessamyn and others) and asked that they review my account again. They un-NIPSA'd the account and told me there were a few individual uploads they'd have to keep NIPSA'd. They were very nice and prompt.

If it's been a while since you (the general anyone You) opened your account and you've managed to put up more photos than art, I'd recommend sending them an e-mail.

WTF, there's a Metachat group on Flickr? I looked for ages.
posted by muddgirl 04 November | 19:00
The link on the sidebar here: "Mecha faces", clued me in.

I'll try safetyfork's method, and upload some generic pics.. and wait, as patiently as I can manage, for a bit, then email them.

It still cheeses me off that the pic i sent to Metachat group actually appeared there, only to disappear again.

Thanks again, all of you. :)

posted by reflecked 05 November | 08:08
safetyfork nailed it. My first Flickr account never went public since the first images I uploaded were cartoons or appropriated and altered graphics. It took me a while to finally abandon the account and start a new account and start by uploading a slew of pictures. My photos started showing up in searches about 12 hours later.

I guess once you're approved it's anything goes. If you look at tags for things like ephemera, pulp, and magazines most of the images that turn up are not photos and are most likely copyrighted by someone else. And there are members that have hundres of these images. I'm not complaining - those and sketchbook pages are my favorite part of Flickr.
posted by Slack-a-gogo 05 November | 10:14
reflected - that link only takes me to the page of "images tagged with 'metachat'". I must be missing something.
posted by muddgirl 05 November | 12:35
Hi mudgirl. :)

With advice I got above from selfnoise, I found the faq that told me to:

From my page, go to groups

Search groups for Metachat

Join that group

then.. back to my photo and send it to the group.

I hope that helps you to sort it. :)

*shamefully Nipsa*
