Interesting article about the McMartin case, including an apology from one of the "victims" for lying. He made the whole thing up.
Great read, Dobbs. Thanks. That poor guy. In the end, it was the authorities and doctors that truly abused him. How sad. Double sad for the unjustly accused who had their lives ruined.
McMartin is something negative in my life and I'm trying to make it a positive. I've got two little kids I love dearly—they've changed the priorities in my life. My goal is to raise them as best as I can and try to lead by example. I want to be totally honest with them, to say, "This is something that happened to me. I did something dishonest, then at some point I was able to be honest about it." I want my children to be able to come to me like I wish I could have with my parents.
Wow. He's still got way more guilt than he should over this -- it was the adults who manipulated him. Funny that he was the source of the airplane story -- that's one of the things I remember definitely doing a spit-take over (that, and the secret tunnels they never found). Yet the prosecution was deadly serious that it was part of their case.
Because of McMartin, the standards for questioning children about sexual abuse changed dramatically.
