Devendra Banhart - "Quedate Luna" I just got the new CD on Saturday, and I've already played it straight through about nine times. (It's 74 minutes in length.)[More:] If my hunch is correct, and this guy really is the reincarnation of Marc Bolan, then this album marks a transitional period, much like the one between Bolan's own folky Tyrannosaurus Rex-era whimsy and the full-on glam rock swagger of "The Slider". (Of course, it's possible I'm overreaching...)
I've been hearing endless buzz and hype about this Devadra character, which makes me disinclined to want to hear him. Plus he looks like a hipster Rasputin.

And Ian Hunter & Mott The Hoople (NTM Slade & Sweet) played better glam rock than (the still very good, but waay overrated) T-Rex.

jonmc, you're so resistant to new/buzzed/hyped things (that may just be regurgitated old things, true) that I despair of EVER getting in your pants! Hmph.

(and taz has jinxed me! I've not been able to download a YSI file since she reported her troubles earlier...wahhhh)

I despair of EVER getting in your pants!

You'd have to get past Pips, bro, and she'd shred ya.

(also, did I ever tell you the story of how I learned the meaning of your nickname? I work in the West Village, which as you know is a heavily gay area. I was meeting a freind around 7 one night and had some time to kill, so I stopped in a bar off Christopher. It was empty so I just sat and sipped my Stella and read my paperback rock and roll book. The barkeeps did look at me a little strangely. I went to use the bathroom and the sink was filled about a foot deep with smooth polished rocks. When I came out I told the bartender, "Y'know, you got rocks in your sink, pal." He looked nonplussed for a second, then said "Oh yeah, that's the owners idea. Don't ask me why." "At least it's not ice cubes in the urinal. I've seen that a buncha times. Always makes me feel like I'm making some perverted cocktail."

Anyway, I sat a-sippin' and a-readin' for a while, then three guys in suits came in, and one bartender cooed "Ooh, here come the daddies."

I put it all together. The beer was good at any rate.)

One day I'll make it to NYC and we'll have to have a beer there. As long as pips understands I'm not really trying to make you. I flirt with everyone.

Nah, we'll drink at Manitoba's. I think you'd have a hard time resisting a bar owned by a guy named Handsome Dick.

Also, as long as I've got your ear, Please read Ladies Man by Richard Price (yes all my heroes are Jewish guys from the Bronx, deal with it). I'd be interested in a gay dude's take on it.

Can't really comment on Mr. Banhart; I've only heard a couple of older things, and since I'm at work I can't download the song you posted. Bit i gotta say, if he sounds anything like his girlfriend's band, CocoRosie, I'll pass. (Self link a-comin') Their album was less than impressive.

Yeah, Last.FM tells me I'm supposed to like Devendra Banhart, but what I've heard feels like a cross between Neutral Milk Hotel -- which I like a lot, the wherefore there -- and Bright Eyes -- which I, um, don't. I'll give this one a whirl, though.

Wait a minute. I'm supposed to dump on jonmc's suspicion of the jejune. Man, I am all about the jejune, I was on that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah thing before they got to Say Yeah. So it's on my list to try.

As for YSI, I got several errors today while uploading songs in your thread, wolfdaddy (James Bond goodness). I think it's a little unstable at the moment.

i'm a huge fan of devendra banhart, as my last.fm will reveal...there is something about his voice that turns my spine into jelly, and that's a good thing. neutral milk hotel and bright eyes? not quite how i'd describe him at all, except for the "unique voice" thing. he is definitely a little closer to cocorosie, which...is growing on me. (sorry, bmarkey) especially "beautiful boys"...i actually got a request on my radio show today for that song. i guess the whole devendra/cocorosie/antony and the johnsons/etc. scene is a bit of an acquired taste.

Never apologize for your tastes. If it works for you, that's great. Me, I'd rather pull my own ears off than listen to them again. But, as my mom says, that's what makes a horse race. :)

Oh, that's a tagline:

Metachat: I'm supposed to dump on your suspicion of the jejune.
