Ask Mecha: Any Audiograbber users here? I just installed it, and I have a problem I can't seem to figure out. It doesn't show (in the application itself) or record file information (artist name, song name, etc.). Here's a screen capture that shows what the tracks look like in the application, how the general settings are configured, and what the saved mp3 file name looks like.

Neither does the file info show up in winamp when playing an mp3 created with Audiograbber. What have I overlooked?

That info isn't actually on the CD. Any ripping app has to get that info from somewhere. You can type it in manually. Or it can connect to a cd database on the internet (or look it up locally if you have a it). Forgive me if you already know this and I've misunderstood your problem.

I recommend Exact Audio Copy, by the way, as the best cd ripper available.

No, you haven't misunderstood... So, how does winamp get the file info?

aha! I now see that "Freedb" grabs that info if it exists... I had no idea what that was. (I just installed this thing about a half-hour ago).

I don't play CDs via WinAmp, so I'm not sure what it does. Does it automatically have the info when you put a new CD in and play it via WinAmp? If it does, it's getting that info over the Internet.

Or are you talking about MP3s? MP3s usually have that info embedded in them.

On Preview: right.

Yeah, winamp automatically shows the info on my CDs.

Winamp by default gets it's title info from the Gracenote CDDB.

Which is fine, except for the fact that it's run by music industry harlots who'd like nothing better than to molest your pooper. Perhaps even with extremely destructive power tools called "lawyers".

FreeDB was created as a direct response to Gracenote CDDB - and their industry shill anus-molesting proclivity.

Also remember that Winamp.com = AOL these days (a crying shame), which is of course also now AOL-Time-Warner. Which is why I run an old version of Winamp which has been totally de-phone-homed and locked down in the firewall - expressly forbidden from ever contacting it's wayward parents and siblings ever again.

"Sorry, Winamp 2.64, or 2.9 or whoever you are on this machine. You're certainly not 3.0, and god forbid you'd be 5. Anyway. I have bad news. Your whole family has joined a terrible, evil cult. Please trust me. I know it's hard, but you really don't want to see them again. They'll only hurt you."
