Eideteker, I found a promo copy of The Brooklyn Side in the bargain bin at a local indie shop a decade ago and fell in love with the 'Rockets. This song is only the tip of the iceberg. "Welfare Music" "Slo Toms" "Smokin' 100's Alone" and "Indianapolis" are just as great.
And in high school I felt like the only roots-rock/cowpunk fan on the east coast, so I'm with you, there.
No no no... what is the origin of the phrase "The Brooklyn Side"?
I have a live version of Indianapolis if you want it. It's the one where he says, "We're doing pretty much all the songs off our new album tonight just because, frankly, we need the practice."
I can yousendit if by some measure of the imagination you don't have it.
The 'Rockets are kind of a strange story. Too hairy and rural for MTV, too punk rock for the Nashville Network. They got a major label contract based on underground acclaim, but Atlantic "declined to promote" the album that resulted (one of the best of the last 20 years IMHO, and they were dropped and went back to an indie label. More proof that the media machine is run by twits.
On preview: put it on yousendit and post it, please. I imagine it just means the Brooklyn side of the bridge, but who knows.
Dunno where all the references on the web went, but here's the gist of "the Brooklyn Side". It's the side of the original bowling lanes in Manhattan that faced Brooklyn. I learned it from a site that has apparently evaporated.
Bottle Rockets are a terrific live band if you ever get a chance to see them. The last time I caught them they played for almost 2.5 hours as the booker kept bringing shots on the stage for them every time they said they were done.
I got my partner hooked on the Bottle Rockets with their "$1000 Car," and he's been a major fan ever since. (I also like 'em a lot, but not to the extent that he does.)
And yeah, jon, "24 Hours A Day" is one cool album.
I know this thread is dead, but in case any BR fans come back around, I thought I'd add a couple songs featuring B. Henneman. This is Coffee Creek, the Henneman/Uncle Tupelo side project.
