24 October 2005

I just got back from a week in new england and I see something in metatalk about a fundraiser. Cursory reading leads me to believe that Matt started a fundraiser with the goal being to get alex and dios to stop posting. Am I way off here or did that actually happen?
Here you go

More or less. I honestly believe the intent was to take some of the heat out of Mefi/Meta and improve the overall opinion of both of them by showing a good-spirited side. amberglow, matteo and a few others disagree strongly and think it set a bad precedent.

I think most people think better of both of them now, assuming the entire thing had any impact on their opinion at all.

Did you actually spend a week in New England? I dunno.

Wow, it actually did happen. Yikes.

No, it must've been a dream. But you were there. And YOU were there. And YOU were in it too! It seemed so real.

You would be surprised how many times I've done that. Or maybe you wouldn't. One of those two, definitely.

I do not understand this reaction.

Do you find dunk tanks at a carnival revulsive?

There is way too much personality conflict on Metafilter. Combine that with the insular nature and the constant navel-gazing, people develop these obsessive views about who people are and what must occur.

Matt and Jessamyn's idea was proposed. There was no coercion. If you doubt that, then look at the thread in question: *I* proposed that if Alex hit the goal first, that I would gladly take a break if my till still reached the goal. It was my idea; not some coerced invidious plan. And I willingly agreed to take a week off, and am glad that by merely not doing something I was able to generate $500 for charity.

People need to understand to not take things so seriously. This was a light-hearted and good natured one-time event. It was not a head-to-head thunderdome battle to resolve the polticial direction of the site for all time (or whatever the heck *those guys* are so worried about).

A week without posting at Metafilter is No Big Deal. Why do people feel the need to make it thus?

What's the concern? That my feelings are hurt? That's silliness. As it should seem fairly obvious to most people, I'm really not the kind of guy who cares about winning popularity contests or public perceptions of me.... after all, this is all anonymous! Is the concern the future implications of it? Matt made it clear this was a one time deal, and the only people talking about the implications are the loud whiners who are talking about a dangerous precedent. There is none!

So take it for what it is worth. The whole thing was light-hearted and for charity. I don't take myself seriously, and I don't take any lasting impact from the charity event. If I am the one effected by it and I support it, why would anyone worry about it?

Two men enter, one man leaves!

*hits dios with a custard pie*

(a good-natured, supportive one)

"Having a bunch of contest about who is more annoying or more famous -- I don't see how that helps anyone."

But having just one such contest is fine and dandy?

Yep, pretty much. Kinda like polio shots: one is good, but 50 isn't any better.

You spent a week in New England..? and SURVIVED? (particularly now, when the weather is going from bad to worse and worse and worse...)
posted by killdevil 24 October | 20:43
You ain't kidding. We're getting 2 days without rain in the next 10. Maybe.
posted by selfnoise 24 October | 21:30
Yeah it rained the whole time I was there, I didn't catch any fish, and apparently it wasn't a good year so the foilage didn't turn. nice fuckin trip, that. I still had a good time though, nice place. I hit up new york city, boston, cape cod, and many nearby areas.

I do not understand this reaction.

I just thought it was really strange coming home from a weeks absense to see that matt himself instigated a proposal that essential lets you know that people over at metafilter dislike you enough to pay money for you to stop posting. That was about the last thing I expected I'd find.

the upset was about setting a precedent of shutting people up.
it's been sussed and resussed
and sussed again.

simple as that.

Ah, I see. I missed it all so I had to bring it here I suppose. Probably shouldn't have.

i still think my idea of giving EB a word limit was the best but the read question is:
did you read the book or are you lost?
