21 October 2005

I know you hate my guts immensely, but since you have no contact information in your profile I just wanted to say thanks for a great post on Mefi. It's gotten some heads to turn where I work.

Actually, your stock has been rising post-Cone Of Silence, dude. Shouldn't you be at the luxury villa sipping a martini and smoking a Cohiba in the jacuzzi?
posted by jonmc 21 October | 16:26
Would you like one of us to post that on metafilter for you or does that violate the spirit of the "dunk". Which was a classy act, btw.
posted by Divine_Wino 21 October | 16:28
An excellent use of MeCha, AlexReynolds. :)

*waves at Alex, is still pissed about that stupid stupid contest*

Jon, the rent boys and I are supping G&Ts as we speak. It's like David Geffen's living room over here.
posted by AlexReynolds 21 October | 16:33
Me too, amberglow. You and Matteo were much better at discussing how you felt and rolling with the punches. I'm such a wuss.
posted by reflecked 21 October | 16:33
Not having ever read any of the political threads at mf, I have no idea why Alex got voted off the island, or what his politics are. Nor do I care.

Needless to say, I didn't vote or donate...
posted by iconomy 21 October | 16:34
Just save some scotch and stogies for dios. And take pictures of the hookers for us hetfolk.

side note: I didn't donate to either side, either.
posted by jonmc 21 October | 16:35
*waves at amber* It's all for a laugh and CC benefits. Personally, I wouldn't have minded the choice of the money going to Amnesty International, but CC is still a good cause. Hopefully we'll all be less bitter moving forward, myself included, especially.
posted by AlexReynolds 21 October | 16:36
i think it was very meanspirited and not cool at all. You don't pit members against each other--ever. We do that too much to begin with.

thanks, reflecked--it was good you chimed in too, and the others who didn't like it.
posted by amberglow 21 October | 16:39
Having only found out about the "cone of silence" just now, I must say I'm a bit surprised at the nature of the fund-raiser, but it seems to have been a success. But let's not do anything like that here, okay? Please?

Alex, you're still a theatrical matriarch but a good sport for all'a that. However, please stop hogging the rent boys. So to speak.
posted by WolfDaddy 21 October | 16:41
It squicked me, but I thought the choice to do it (on A &D's parts) and the positive good will it showed was classy.
posted by Divine_Wino 21 October | 16:42
Wait, you mean the cone of silence only applies on MeFi?! I want my money back!
posted by mullacc 21 October | 16:54
I steered way clear of that whole shebang. Good cause, but not a good precedent.
posted by me3dia 21 October | 17:05
wolfdaddy, I don't think taz and dodgy would ever even think of doing anything like that here. I think all of our differences can be settled with jello wrestling, don't you?
posted by iconomy 21 October | 17:05

No we won't - I promise. I have to admit when I first saw it I literally laughed out loud. But afterwards I was thinking about it and I wasn't so sure it was a good idea - this is the sort of thing that gets thrown back in peoples faces and the fallout may not be so good natured. Having said that, Alex and dios are big enough to take care of themselves and hopefully the rest of the community will just forget about it when it's over.
posted by dodgygeezer 21 October | 17:07
Maybe we could have some other sort of contest -- like a dare auction. People could donate something they'd do, like uh, mudpuppie handling a snake, or jonmc sending his kidney stone in a jar to the winner, and we could bid on it. Proceeds go to the charity of darer's choice.
posted by me3dia 21 October | 17:15
Interesting. (darer's choice, or daree's?)

Or vote on who gets thrown into the jello...
*Realizes his resemblence to a marachino cherry makes him a prime target... regrets suggestion*
posted by wendell 21 October | 17:20
Darer's. Basically, it would be I'll do this on behalf of Charity X.
posted by me3dia 21 October | 17:33
I'm down for the jello wrestling as long as there's also whipped cream. And I mean the real stuff, no CoolWhip or nitrous oxide fueled stuff.

Though I'll take the N2O on its own now that I think about it.

Since we all seem to be so musical, and diversely so at that, I'd suggest a fund-raiser tied to RadioMecha or mixswaps or something like that??
posted by WolfDaddy 21 October | 17:36
What charity?

And more importantly, what flavor of jello?
posted by iconomy 21 October | 17:37
What I don't understand is how I completely missed this contest? I think I saw a reference to it earlier this week but didn't have time to follow up on it.

Oh well, I think its probably a good sign that I'm missing some of these MeFi moments. I'm making an effort to curb my online devotions.

And if the thing results in a kinder and gentler Blue then I am all for it, this once.
posted by fenriq 21 October | 17:53
Oh, I would totally do a charity CD swap. Here's one to model it on.

We could set up some sort of simple silent auction on the site -- create a blog subsection where a photo of the mix (with the tracklist hidden until the bidding's over) is posted as an entry, and the bids go in the comments. Comments close on a particular day, and the money is collected via Paypal or analog, then donated to the charity of choice. CDs are then sent to the winners.

posted by me3dia 21 October | 17:54
In fact, I'll set this up myself, if someone is willing to help with the coordination -- I'm way too busy to do it alone.
posted by me3dia 21 October | 17:55
me3dia, I'll help after the first of the month; I'm pretty way too busy myself until then, but hopefully things will be less crazy after the 1st.

As to a likely charity, being a Houstonian, I'd nominate the Red Cross' Katrina relief fund. They seem to be the only organization actually getting cash into the hands of the many many people who need it now. The housing voucher program run by FEMA and administered by the city of Houston, is such a nightmare of red tape, FEMA's (still) incredibly slow response in paying the City (who then pays the landlords), restrictions and left-hand-not-knowing-what-the-right's-doing that many landlords, including myself, have had to make an excruciating decision not to participate...instead recommending Section 8 housing vouchers through HUD.
posted by WolfDaddy 21 October | 18:13
Waiting till November would be fine with me, wolfdaddy. The mixers would need time to get their mixes made anyway.

I've posted the idea in a new post here.

Personally, I really respect your showing a sense of humor, Alex, and it makes me respect you more now, and in the future on MeFi, too. Cheers to both you & Dios. The contest was good experiment for MeFi and showed even "bitter" rivals can demonstrate that ultimately, this is all just pixels on a screen. For their part, the naysayers have made some pretty limp protestations, and are the only ones sounding bitter in the end.

Wait, what contest? Someone fill me in.

And for the record, I'm totally up for jello-wrestling-for-charity, but not snake-handling-for-charity.

Stop bringing up the goddamned snakes!
