Cat People- Why is it that I'm allergic to cats yet drawn to women with cats as pets? And is there any good way to deal with the allergy?
Women who keep cats are typically slobs. So you're not allergic to cats as much as you're allergic to filth, so all you need to do is find a chick who has cats and yet isn't a disgusting pig.

Good luck!

I'm far messier than cat people though, and my friends with an immaculate apartment have a cat.

Hey man, I'm just speaking from my personal experience. Don't shoot the messenger, huh?

No problem, it's definitely an allergy to cats.

It may not yet be to this point, but don't allow the cat on your bed or in your bedroom, if that can be swung.

Vacuum the house a lot (but again, this is probably no good unless you already live together).

That once-daily alergy stuff might work. Benadryl works the best -- but it puts most people right to sleep.

Wash the hands after you touch the cat (or just don't touch it).

You could kill the cat. But that might jeopardize the relationship (I jest! I love cats).

I have a friend who's allergic to cats and yet is very much a cat person, as is her partner. She takes some kind of medication that allows her to live in a house with four cats, so it CAN be done. I'm sorry I don't know any specifics right off hand, but if you can't find out what these medications are, email me and I'll ask her for the full rundown.

I'm a slob, and I have a cat, but I'm a boy.

I am not a slob and I have a cat. For the record.

Uh, in case there was some question - that wasn't a proposal... Just a lone voice speaking for clean cat owners everywhere.

There is a cat allergy vaccine which they've been working on since 1996--but I see the company developing it went under in 1999. Here's an article from this year--Cat allergies 'could be blocked'

I see a an asthma medicine called Zafirlukast may some effect.

Zafirlukast is one of a relatively new class of asthma medicines known as leukotriene antagonists. These drugs block chemicals released by lung cells that are responsible for allergy symptoms. Because the drug has been very successful in treating asthma in adults and children, Hopkins researchers tested its potential to stop allergic reactions to cats.

I know people who raised children with severe allergies who had a daily drill.. Dust, dust, dust, mop mop, mop, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. They didn't have pets buyt--it's a proactive approach and a step in the right direction

Then wipe the kitty down with a dander suppressing solution. Easier said than done, to be sure. I have no idea how efficacious those are but I have seen them sold in pet stores.

You should also post this on AskMetaFilter--there are probably more doctor members over there who might have a clue. And, you know, Google it up. I'm sure there's places that give the basics.

Basic Advice here.
Since 1/3 of our life is spent sleeping, keeping the cat out of the bedroom can help excessive exposure. So keep the cat out of your bedroom!

I'm allergic to the 2 cats that came with my partner. I've been taking Claritin and a Nasonex nasal spray once a day, and it has made life near normal. I wash my hands immediately after petting the cats, and vacuum about 3x a week. We also have an ionic air filter thingy, and I change the return air filter monthly. Also, I second not allowing the cats on the bed. ours aren't, except in winter, and only at the foot, outside the sheets.

There is indeed hope!

Tell her: "It's them or me." You won't have to worry about her ever again.

Unless she blithely says "Okay!" in which case run. Run fast. Change phone numbers, locks, names, addresses.

Stop breathing. And, for good measure, stop eating and drinking. Then go sit at the bottom of the ocean until the fish pick your bones clean.

You could try taking grapeseed extract, which can be found in any health food store. No side effects, and when taken regularly, helps incredibly with allergies.
