Whoa! Check this weirdness out... [More:]
Five years ago I bought a print from art.com after searching for "Albuquerque", where I was born and (now) live. The photo was taken in the 60s on Central (at the time very much still a part of Route 66) at Carlisle looking east, after a rainstorm, with much signage and the (then) First National Bank building in the background. I'd not seen the photo before, I figured it was relatively obscure. It meant something to me, of course, and I knew that my family would like it. So, now, I have it hanging behind my bed, as shown in this photo I just took:

Photo in my room.

So tonight I'm watching this week's episode of Veronica Mars, and what shows up in Logan Echolls's bedroom?

Photo on VM.

So this is a more notable print than I thought. Perhaps I should have paid closer attention to what I was buying. Anyone know any details on this?
It's by Ernst Haas and available for sale all over Albuquerque (malls, Old Town, etc.), hung in places like 66 Diner and Blake's Lotaburger. If you Google Haas and Albuquerque a lot of online sources come up. Wish I could tell you more.

Cool! Thanks. I had no idea. D'uh.

Aha. The Haas site says it was taken in '69, which I'm glad to know.

I guess I need to get out more, huh?

You're not missing much, IMO.

Well, Albuquerque's small. I was talking to my friend (and ex) Erin who I met in Austin but lives in Santa Fe now. She's kinda sorta getting used to Santa Fe but I told her that Albuquerque still feels too small and backwater to me after Austin--which, really, wasn't big enough for me, either. But I loved Austin.

And, even though Albuquerque is Albuquerque, I was born here and have many ties, family, and memories here and I love it for what it is. Although I admit that I'm not that happy with most of the changes I've seen since I last lived here 15 years ago. Maybe I'm just getting old.

It IS cool when you see real-life scenes on TV... that photo also rocks, BTW. I've never heard of "Veronica Mars" but they had the good sense to put a shirtless guy in front of the photo, which is probably the only way it could have been made more interesting, so kudos to them. ;)

It's a great photo. After reading about it and Haas, I feel I should have known of it. I don't really know much, if anything, at all about photography which is a real shame because I really have enjoyed very good photography quite often.

Funny how such a classic and well-known photo would initially just be a personal discovery for me. My grandmother's house, the house my dad grew up in, isn't far from where that photo was taken. It's actually a very familiar scene to me, as that intersection and Central east from it looked much the same into the 70s.

the first flush of discovery is the fun of it

Notice how they changed the Conoco sign though?

You're right! I totally didn't notice that. Did they change the KFC sign, too? I'll have to check later.
