Brown pants, white sweater, black shoes. Am I supposed to wear dark socks, or light socks? (My choices are black or off-white.) Help!
Black shoes = black socks.

Thanks!
Is it okay to wear black shoes with brown pants?

One of each.

yep, black.

And yes, it's OK to wear black shoes with brown pants. At least, it is for men. Not so sure for women.

I went for the black pants.

And hey, these shoes make me tall!

Lookin' fine, mudpuppie! Big date?

Dress up for a date? Ha! People who date me get the denim me or no me at all.

Job interview. Fingers crossed.

Good luck, pup!

ACK! I JUST DE-LINTED. THEN I PICKED UP MY BRIEF BAG AND DISCOVERED THAT THE CAT HAS BEEN SLEEPING ON/IN IT. BAD CAT! BLACK PANTS SUCK!

BUT THESE SHOES STILL MAKE ME TALL.

Um, I don't mean to sound like some sort of priss, but socks should match trousers -- a shade darker is okay.

Trouser-matching socks extend the line of the leg to the shoe. When you stride forward, the trouser leg lifts, revealing a few inches of sock. If your socks match your shoes, the leg looks only as long as the hem of the trousers.

White socks with dark trousers and shoes look clownish.

I wish you luck on your interview! Now wish me luck on mine. I already had it, but I want the job.

Your leather has to match -- black shoes, black belt, black watch band (should it be leather). Not so much on the shoes and pants. But that's all for guys, women have a whole 'nother universe of rules I don't understand.

Good luck, mudpuppie!

Thanks for the visual, Hugh. Makes sense that way.

I assume I've missed the good luck train, so I'll jump on the "I hope it went well" train. Let us know, pup.

Is there an 11:00 report? Hope it went well!

Awww, y'all are so sweet! (And I wasn't fishing for attention, promise. Really did need the help.)

The interview went pretty well, I think, although I'm worried that my allergy fog may have affected my proofreading prowess.

Thanks for the support -- and the fashion advice, which I am clearly still in need of.

So, if I had gone with the brown pants, could I have worn the black shoes with the black socks? No leather for me -- watches don't fit me and these pants didn't need belting. If I'd worn the brown pants, could I have worn the black belt, or would I have needed a brown belt?

I'm much better off sticking to jeans and Docs.

I think that if you match your belt to something it's your shoes rather than your pants. I think the preciseness of the match rises with the degree of formality. Business dress = ox blood shoes + dark brown belt is not so bad. Formal wear = black shoes + black belt only.

I don't tend to dress by rules, and think that black and brown look OK together, but my fashion-conscious friend said that mixing black and brown is a big no-no. I still don't know why, but she always looks amazing, so I bow to her superior knowledge.

Leather no longer has to match, but shoes match socks when wearing pants.

mudpuppie, there's a big argument over shoes/socks/pants matching. If the only socks you have match your shoes - fine; if the only socks you have match your pants - fine. Someone will be unhappy with whatever you choose. You win!

And I hope you get the job.

Do you wear blue socks with jeans? Just curious.
posted by agropyron 15 October | 00:04
Not that you asked me, but yes, my mum wears blue socks with her jeans.
posted by deborah 15 October | 12:10
Yep, black socks with black shoes.

I have, however, been told that dark shoes worn with shorts necessitate white socks (because of the shorts), which I think is idiotic. She maintains, however, that you cannot wear dark socks with shorts.

Oooh, I'm so late.

Do you wear blue socks with jeans?

I don't consider jeans, trousers. I really just used the word so as not to embarrass my British compatriots with talk of pants.

But yeah, I try not to wear white socks with jeans, or any dark pants (err... trousers). They make my legs look like whitewall tires.
