I created the article on Q, but now it looks like it may be deleted.

Can anyone explain Quonsarism to the friendly, good-natured Wiki Admin people so the article can stay?

Please add your thoughts to the Wiki deletions page/Quonsar linked in the fpp. FREE QUONSARRRR!

I think they may want something rather more fact based. I do hope that they don't kill the blogebrity category though.
posted by dodgygeezer 12 October | 15:58
The blogebrity category was a great idea. I added Kottke and Barger to it.

Does anyone have any facts to add (without infringing on Q's privacy) about the value and power of quonsar? If so, add them by editing the article.

He has certainly changed the way I view the blort, that's for sure.

How come I don't have an entry (or even a mention) in Wikipedia? I shall mull it over a White Castle after work.
posted by jonmc 12 October | 16:09
Someone must have seen this thread earlier, and decided they didn't like the quonsar entry. Boo hiss.
posted by iconomy 12 October | 16:11
Nah, there's a New Pages page and I'm sure there's a whole bunch of people who monitor it for noise.

Anyone got a good usable picture of the q? His website (oh, the irony) seems to blorted.
posted by dodgygeezer 12 October | 16:18
yes, i do... but does he want his pic there? or real name, biographical info, etc?
posted by Wedge 12 October | 16:29
fair point
posted by dodgygeezer 12 October | 16:32
i created the quonsar wiki article in response to that wiki thread from earlier today, iconomy.
posted by mcgraw 12 October | 16:33
They deleted that article on my left nut too. WHAT THE HELL WIKIPEDIA?
posted by PinkStainlessTail 12 October | 16:42
Well at the very least uncapitalize the name, you unthinking, uncaring sod.

Okay, that was a mite harsh. But still ... how many times has he said there's no capital "q"?
posted by yhbc 12 October | 16:43
I think there's a bug in Mediawiki that doesn't allow article names to have a lowercase first initial.
posted by dodgygeezer 12 October | 16:52
the capitalization was default, commish. when i created the article, i typed a lower-case q, honest.

i am an unthinking, uncaring sod, though, no argument there.
posted by mcgraw 12 October | 16:53
ok, i cleaned it up some. please add/edit at your leisures.

great job, Wedge! I hope that's enough to keep it alive. thanks.
posted by mcgraw 12 October | 17:29
oh christ alexreynolds grow up and stop defacing the wikipedia. how old are you? if you really want to help, you should sign up for a wiki account and then make a valid case for your "edits", instead of vandalizing the page. otherwise, go do your little axe-grinding elsewhere, please.

Alex needs to get an offline life. If he did the minute of the online one wouldn't mean so much. I'm sorry for using your IRL name.
posted by Carbolic 12 October | 21:25
This is why I really don't like Wikipedia all that much (and Metafilter, recently). It's just the internet taking itself too seriously. What happened to all the fun?
posted by muddgirl 12 October | 21:30
i'm boggled that my emailing alex has so thoroughly pissed him off. what if someone actually caused him harm? good grief! i'm flattered by the wiki effort, but as i implied elsewhere, i think wikipedia is silly. besides, it forces the capital q, which in my opinion makes it brain-dead from the git-go.
posted by quonsar 12 October | 22:08
I'd rather Wikipedia be useful, rather than funny. The entry still doesn't impart much of any useful information. Uncyclopedia might be a better place for it.

I learned that quonsar has an astoundingly high I.Q. Really, how do a couple articles about internet personalities make wikipedia any worse than it already is?
posted by muddgirl 13 October | 01:34
oh well, if quonsar wants it deleted, then who are we to call him on it? only his adoring public. sellout :)
posted by muddgirl 13 October | 01:36
well, i would've added more useful, higher quality biographical information to q's entry... but i was kinda waiting for the ok from the man himself. hence, my quick & dirty edit was topical and brief. not unlike most other wiki stubs. q opted out gracefully, no there's no love lost.

however.

if a wanker like jason kottke (whom i guarantee no one outside of the cracker-assed, circle-jerking echochamber that is the "blog-o-sphere" has ever heard of, and couldn't care less about) is considered notable enough to warrant his own entry in such an encyclopedia, i'm not quite sure quonsar should be immediately ruled out as non-notable/vanity "blogger"/whatever.

1. meepzorp gets all kinds of traffic, and blort is well-regarded among the more technosavvy among us.
2. as well, he's something of an internet celebrity... along the lines of a lowtax, rusty foster, cmdr taco, drew curtis, mathowie, et al., although q's site lacks a messageboard.
3. meepzorp existed in one form or another long before kottke even discovered his first pube.
4. quonsar has been getting "not-paid" to "blog" and/or "blogging" professionally (whateverthefuck that means) way before kottke started w/ his micropatronage/panhandling schtick.
5. gene roddenberry got the idea for star trek after listening to quonsar talk in his sleep!
posted by Wedge 13 October | 02:22
So that whole Gene Roddenberry/quonsar slash fiction thing wasn't really fiction after all?
posted by taz 13 October | 02:40
no. afaik, they slept in separate beds, in separate rooms. didn't mean to imply anything gay. (umm, nttawwt!)

posted by Wedge 13 October | 03:00
Joking aside, it seems reasonable to me to have a wiki page for quonsar - although I think that says more about Wikipedia than quonsar's celebrity.

To see what I mean look at the category for blogger. Jeesh. I mean is Bartcop really that big a deal?
posted by dodgygeezer 13 October | 03:09
I figure if blort has enough traffic, then why not let it stay? It's not like it's a whole article about his mefi war with minya or something. It's about a legitimate webmaster with a lefitimate and respected site.

Unfortunately, wiki editors often associate "I've never heard of him," with "non notable."

and christ, alex you're a fucking tool.
posted by shmegegge 13 October | 03:18
Nice double-standard you folks have going. Enjoy worshipping Quonsar the Magnificent Tool.
posted by AlexReynolds 13 October | 04:42
We're here for you Alex, truly. Just take a deep breath, let go and relax a bit, and I think you'll enjoy it (I think that because I've seen you being really fun and silly before). If you're not into the silly, that's okay - not everybody's cup of tea, obviously.

But trust me... If you want to just hang out and have fun, nobody will give you hard time.
posted by taz 13 October | 05:30
Yeah, what taz said - we welcome all kinds here and, as long as it stays reasonably friendly, nobody will get hurt (make sure you bring your thick skin with you, though, to be sure). If things get nasty, though, well, you don't want to see taz when she gets angry.

Thanks once again Wedge-- this time for pointing out on that discussion page that Jessamyn has a "vanity" Wiki article.

Those guys think Quonsar created the article. Jessamyn refers to Quonsar's significance as "cult". Right.

And I'm not even going to do a google search of "Jessamyn" for unique hits (one measure of relevance, according to Wiki admin). The FSM to Quonsar google unique hits count ratio is 5:1, FSM around 675 unique hits, Quonsar-- 155. That's suggests Quonsar relevance, given the worldwide coverage of the ID/Darwinism in public schools debate. Quonsar turns up on one-fifth as many unique server pages as FSM on the net. Vanity?

Q's wishes should be respected and the article deleted for that reason only.

But, but, but... OK.
posted by puddinghead 13 October | 22:37
i don't think i know enough to have a real opinion on it but i pretty much agree with this:
What's the point of deleting this, it's not like there is anyone else or any thing that has the same name. Why do you waste time on deleting this when there are so many stubs that need to be fleshed out.

personally, i'd like a q entry (for my own reasons)but more refined or done differently--
--maybe i'll finish this thought later.
