Help me make a mixtape! URGENT! My best friend moved to Launaguet, France and the first week has been real rough. I'm sending her a care package and want to include a MetaChat mixtape. Please hope me!
[More:]
Nothing too punk, or too sappy, everything else is fair game!
Go through all my music threads and grab what you like, I recommend everything wholeheartedly.;>

jonmc: I've already done that... with pretty much every music thread you've participated in.

I'm asking because I thought a gift from total strangers might warm her cockles, not because I lack music. ;)

Give us something to work with here.

You should totally go on Metafilter and ask Languagehat to do this. If only so you can call the mixtape "From Languagehat to Launaguet"

She's 30.
She misses people who speak English.
She likes songs you can sing along to.
Her musical tastes are a wide net, but I've never heard her listen to anything where the lyrics are hard to understand, or where the music is sad and drippy.

I have no idea what info to provide, I've never asked strangers to collaborate on a mixtape for somebody they've never met before :-)

2nd seanyboy's note. I thought for a moment that L'hat had moved to France :-) It's too good to pass up!

Here are the top five songs that just came into my head.

1. Iron Woman by Devin Davis
2. Kissing the Lipless by The Shins
3. As We Go Up, We Go Down - Guided by Voices
4. Letter from an Occupant by the New Pornographers
5. Sloan - Losing California

How about some classic rock ballad stuff? Like Whitesnake "Here I go again on my own" Mr. Big "I'm the one who wants to be with you" etc. I have a bunch if you're interested.

Aretha Franklin? Pavement? Sly and the Family Stone? Funkadelic? Regina Spektor? gimme a clue here, I'll post whatevah.

How about some progressive hip hop? Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, De La Soul, Digable Planets...

R&B, funk and progressive hip-hop are more likely to fly than hair bands. I appreciate any efforts!! :-)

Edible, 'Mr. Big Stuff' is by Jean Knight (well, most likely--there are other versions, but hers is the big one, and, as far as I know, Aretha Franklin never recorded it), and 'Electric Relaxation' is by A Tribe Called Quest (it's from the Midnight Marauders album).

(I hate mislabeled mp3s--I always get so excited, thinking 'Wow, I didn't know Bob Dylan did a version of 'Stuck in the Middle With You',' or whatever, and then I download it and it's just the same ol' Stealer's Wheel song as always.)

If I were home and in front of my computer, I'd be an uploading fool.

Mosch, be sure to post your final playlist....

This just keeps getting better! You all kick ass!

box, the reason the tribe track is labeled midnight marauders is cause it's from the album directory; it's not mislabeled, it's underlabeled. And as for "mr bigstuff," screwup, it seems to be a widespread misconception on the internet. Too bad. I'll rename it.

On friday I posted a YSI mix at honestengine.blogspot.com. It's one I made for an earlier monkeyfilter mix swap, and is pretty good if I do say so myself.
(I'd put Ca Plane Por Moi on anyone going to France's tape, along with Jet Boy Jet Girl).

Whups. Now I feel like a dufus.

Here's as good as I can do from this CPU

Devin Davis - Iron Woman (The PERFECT song for this mix)

The Shins - When I Goosestep
(a little more obscure)

Guided By Voices - As We Go Up, We Go Down (perfect lo-fi bubblegum pop)

Sloan - Losing California (power pop! power pop!)

Belle And Sebastian - If She Wants Me A song about a guy and his best friend that happens to be a girl. Careful!

Junior Senior - Shake Your Coconuts (DFA Mix) "Come on in/hang your coat/Eat Our Chips (c'mon)/We've got loads!"

I really want to do the Mecha radio! So many songs!

The Planet by Gang Starr
most anything by The Knight Brothers
Positively Fourth Street by Bob Dylan
White Wall by Mando Diao
Sell Your Body to the Night by Turbonegro
Summertime Cowboy by Husky Rescue

French people should like these.

Sorry, I'm unable to upload here.

Hey, but so should expatriates living in France. Like the songs, I mean.

Here's a different Gang Starr song, and a different Bob Dylan song.

Gang Starr - Beyond Comprehension
Bob Dylan - Paths of Victory
