For "Lost" fans, a screencap from season 1 episode 3. Spot anything?
the DHARMA logo on the plane?
posted by puke & cry 09 October | 17:24
wasn't there supposed to be a logo on the shark too? And they kind of explained the polar bears, so that's nice.
posted by puke & cry 09 October | 17:25
I see the logo, but I don't believe it.
posted by WolfDaddy 09 October | 17:27
What? No, I was just pointing out that the black kid is walking on a wing that clearly says "NO WALKING". But, the DHARMA logo is pretty cool too.

:D
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 17:27
wolfdaddy, it's genuine. I think there's very little chance that it's not the logo; it's not clear what angle we're supposed to look at it from.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 17:29
And it shows rather excellently that the show has had a real vision for the plot outline from day one.

I strongly suspect that was a red herring. Don't forget Walt's comic book; and Walt's bird book.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 17:32
"Genuine" in what context, P_G? Not that I don't think that seeing the logo there is cool, it just looks like a watermark, and not a decal/paintjob. I also don't think the writers were thinking that far ahead.

*goes and grabs his dvd set, compulsive freeze framing in mind*
posted by WolfDaddy 09 October | 17:52
To me it looks like a DHARMA plane painted over to look like an Oceanic plane. What does watermark mean in this context?
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 17:54
I meant "genuine" as in undoctored.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 17:56
I've never watched it but it seems pretty cool. How can I get caught up on the episodes and know wtf is going on if I were to jump in? Any good fan sites?

You can't. BitTorrent or buy the DVD.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 18:00
Moonbird, if you don't want to watch the first season, maybe try Television Without Pity? They do lovingly complete, exhaustive recaps of all Lost episodes.

And you should really check out the show -- it's one of the best things on the tube in quite a while.
posted by killdevil 09 October | 18:13
However, you should definitely check out the first season... I watched it more or less all at once in catch-up mode myself.
posted by killdevil 09 October | 18:14
Thanks for that... all my torrents are coming up dry.
posted by moonbird 09 October | 18:16
P_G, I eat my words. By "watermark" I meant a photoshop effect, but damned if there's not a logo right there on that plane on my very own DVD set. *boggles*

One of the other things that made me skeptical was that the plane crashed upside down, yet the logo looks right side up. Whatever, I'm tripping, you're right I'm wrong, thanks for the fish!
posted by WolfDaddy 09 October | 18:18
Moonbird, magical Lost-related link of some sort is located here.
posted by killdevil 09 October | 18:26
Thanks killdevil! I never seem to get high-speed torrents, and this one has petered out at 1kb/s. I'll keep trying though, you've given me hope (the more I read about it, the more I need to watch it).
posted by moonbird 09 October | 18:40
moonbird, sounds like you have a firewall issue maybe...

What client do you use? Are you getting any "remote initiated" peers (denoted with an R instead of an L on most clients)?

Tell us about your internet connection and we can prbly help you
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 19:00
I don't get it.
posted by seanyboy 09 October | 19:05
I'm using blogtorrent, and it only gives the download stats (no r or l). I am using windoze firewall, but have blogtorrent listed as an exception, so it ought not to be blocking it. Cable modem, etc.

(I know this has nothing to do with Lost, sorry to threadjack).
posted by moonbird 09 October | 19:24
Get Azureus and you can find out if you have a problem with the NAT/Firewall test.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 19:28
Did that P-G, still like 3kb/s. I think I might just run to the sto' and rent the thang.
posted by moonbird 09 October | 20:01
Did you do the NAT/Firewall test? What was the result?
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 20:59
They could have just stuck the logo in on the DVD, you know, maybe it was never in the origional TV show.

Lost = stupid. IMO. A soap opera for, well anyone but a soap opera none the less!!!!!!!!!!!!
posted by delmoi 09 October | 21:43
I like soap operas. ABC soaps, to be exact. I started watching them when I graduated from high school and didn't have anything to do midday. I catch them occasionally now. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with soap operas.

I thought the wierd thing about that picture was that it wasn't the actor who plays Walt, but the one who plays the young Chris Rock on "Everybody Hates Chris"...

BA-A-A-AD wendell; I'm sorry, Earl

To second the Abrams-has-a-master-plan thought, what Desmond thinks is behind the concrete in the bunker would explain the difficulty the survivors had with determining direction last season.
posted by deadcowdan 09 October | 22:03
Oh my god, you're absolutely right. That's awesome.

You're probably joking, but anyway - no, it's on my tv-rip bittorrent.
posted by Pretty_Generic 09 October | 22:09
And by the way, I just checked my original bittorrent file of s01e03, made from the original broadcast, and the logo is there as well. It doesn't look quite right somehow, perhaps it was added in post-production, but it's there.
posted by deadcowdan 09 October | 22:26
so they do know what they're doing kind of. Nice.

I was thinking about walts talking backwards talking which apparently could either be "don't push the button, the button is bad" or "push the button, no button's bad" and wondering if it references a button on the keyboard of the apple ][. I think that's stretching it though.
posted by puke & cry 09 October | 22:44
Oh, and there was a logo on the shark.
posted by puke & cry 09 October | 22:47
P_G, did the test, said everything was okie-dokie.
posted by moonbird 09 October | 23:56
I figured that it was that this shadow totally looks like a bunny:

Or, really, an armadillo, but I'm going to go with "bunny".

Not at all! But it's not an Apple ][, it's a Basis 108. 108=4+8+15+16+23+42.
posted by Pretty_Generic 10 October | 04:41
I'm enjoying the show, but my ultimate enjoyment is going to hinge on whether this is all ad hoc or planned or at least if it all makes sense together.
posted by kmellis 10 October | 05:06
No, wait, it's an Apple ][. Sry.
posted by Pretty_Generic 10 October | 05:16
By the by, the TWOP recaps are really amusing ... I've been reading them ever since the first season of 24 (in fact I still read the 24 recaps even though I don't watch the show no mo'). This, to me, is priceless regarding Lost:

"and, um, how a man can survive when his only entertainment is Mama Cass records and old Apple II games ("GO W: You cannot go that way. SCREW THIS: I don't know how to screw")."

I can't stop giggling.

So, now that I'm hooked, what is Dharma (in this sense) anyway?
posted by moonbird 10 October | 14:18
moonbird see this thread for some cryptic hints...which I then promptly spoil in great detail.
