Old, inherited laptops for dummies... [More:]

I received an old-ish Presario 1245 as a hand-me-down and would like to get it WiFi-ed.

I have no idea how to do this.

It doesn't have an ethernet card, just a dial-up port.

It's got one USB port, which isn't in use.

Where do I start? And how do I do it on the cheap? (I've got a wireless router on the desktop, so that much is taken care of.)

Thanks!
Well, simple... get a USB WiFi adaptor. Linksys and Netgear make decent ones (Here's the Netgear one).

Or, if you have PC card slots on the laptop, you could get a PC card adaptor, which is preferable (because one of these would be situated mostly inside the machine rather than plugged in and outside of it). Again, Linksys is a good brand.

Get a Wireless-G compatible card or USB adaptor (that is, one that supports 802.11G).

can't you get an external thing with an antenna that plugs into the ethernet slot or something?

amberglow, that's another way to phrase my question.

I think killdevil sorted it out for me. Thanks, murderous satanic one!

Thanks, murderous satanic one!

Funny, I always imagined something more like this. (Particularly the group photo, lower right).
