I like to embarass myself. You do too. [More:]So I pulled up iTunes Party Shuffle, set it to 'every damned thing', and took at look at the very first 25 songs it suggested.

Best: Radiohead - No Surprises (Live @ Sounds Eclectic)
Worst: Hampton The Hampster - The Hampsterdance Song, Extended Mix.

What's "iTunes"?

Hmm. Best is Marquee Moon, by Television (one of my favorite songs ever).

Worst is I Shot a Dog by Sparklehorse. That's not very embarassing, but it's my least favorite of the bunch.

(exports lots and lots of dirty secrets to her Itunes library in case anyone ever asks again)

Best - What is and should never be (Led Zeppelin)
Worst - Everything is permitted (Meatloaf) Ouch, that hurts. Both to listen to and to admit that it exists in my collection.

Television

Most excellent. I was listening to Marquee Moon earlier tonight. Fucking great.

Best - Not as Good as I Once Was - Toby Keith

Worst - Not as Good as I Once Was - Toby Keith

I sort of have a crush on him after being forced to watch the video about 10 times by my son, who watches CMT, MTV, and VH1 while getting ready for school. The song is horrible (so hackneyed), but I can't stop listening to it.

For once nothing real embarassing came up on the shuffle tests. I don't have an ipod, so this is based on the last 25 songs played on "All Music Shuffle" mode from my library of songs as the streaming subscription service MusicNow . This is out of the total 1,953 songs I've added to the liabrary so far.

BEST: CHEAP TRICK - Stop This Game (I haven't listened to this album in a while and hearing this song made me put the album and play it 3 or 4 times)

WORST: SCRITTI POLITTI - Perfect Way (not a bad song, but of the group it's the one I like the least). Maybe Robbie Williams could be the worst, but I have a soft spot for him.

The 25 artists were:
U2 / Scritti Politti / Cheap Trick / David Bowie / Donovan / Supertramp / Specials / Candyskins / Howlin Wolf / Bowie (again) / Buzzcocks / Robbie Williams / Hot Hot Heat / Kaiser Cheifs / Troggs / Guadalcanal Diary / Kills / Jets to Brazil / Redwalls / Candyskins (again) / Fall / Cream / Judas Priest / Wareen Zevon / Louis Jordan

The shuffle seems to be favoring alternative rock and new wave this time.

Best: Probably "Academy Fight Song" - Mission of Burma (love the REM version so I had to seek this out. "London Calling" by the Clash and "I Need A Lover" by John Mellencamp (in his John Cougar days) are good too.

Worst: "You Drive Me Crazy" - Britney Spears. I hate to admit it but some of her songs, especially her earlier ones, are very catchy and they're kind of guilty pleasures for me.

Best: Dinosaur Jr., Freak Scene
Worst: Ted Nugent, Great White Buffalo (One of my husband's picks. We have do not have the same taste in music.)

Best: "Streets of Philadelphia", Bruce Springsteen. Mmmm, Brooooce.

Worst: "Not Gonna Get Us" by Tatu. My total, utter guilty pleasure. I looooove Tatu, especially to work out to.

The artists that came up:

Tatu/The Clash/Cabaret/NZ Symphony Orchestra/Bruce Springsteen/Morrissey/Carl Orff/Cecelia Bartoli/Bob Dylan/Howard Shore/Dropkick Murpheys/Nickel Creek/Jimmy Buffett/OCMS/Babatunde Olatunji/Janet Jackson/Caruso/Loreena McKennitt/Racine Sans Bout

Techno, punk, classical, African, opera, rock, and recordings made in a vodoun peristyle. This is why I don't use the shuffle feature ;)

Best: Bob Dylan - I'm Not There

Worst: RIAA - Red Hot 110 Degrees (a second-rate mash-up of 'Public Enemy Number One' and Jan and Dean's 'Ride the Wild Surf')

Artists: Gato Negro, M'Boom, Matthew Shipp, Archie Shepp, DJ Yoda, Sage Francis, J-Live, M.I.A./Diplo, Augustus Pablo, Donny Hathaway, DJ P/Toto, DJ Spooky, Bob Dylan and The Band, Amon Tobin, MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, Miles Davis, RIAA, M-Base Collective, Twilight Circus Dub Sound System, John Coltrane, Roy Ayers, Coldcut, RZA, Isaac Hayes

Dub reggae, avant-jazz, indie hip-hop, folk music, blaxploitation soundtracks--this is why I use the shuffle feature.

Best?
Handcuffs -- Treepeople
Filler -- Minor Threat
Tom -- Codeine

Worst?
Higher Ground -- Stevie Wonder
O Death -- Camper Van Beethoven
My Name Is Pimp (Mack's Theme) -- Big Chief

I'm not embarassed, though I think I got lucky on that front in the shuffle.

I wasn't embarrassed enough with my first shot, so I unchecked "play higher rated songs more often", and got:

BEST: Ben Folds, "Bitchs Ain't Shit"
WORST: The Juliana Hatfield Three, "Little Pieces" (last played, 3/13/05; I have no memory of the tune, even though I've had the CD for years)
HONORABLE MENTION: 7 Seconds of Love, "First Drink of the Day"
DISHON. MENTION: 4 Non Blondes, "Superfly" (if we go by popular opinion, I imagine)

Artist list: Sex in Dallas; Viva Voce; Nine Inch Nails*; Ben Folds; Supple; The White Stripes*; NIN; 7 Seconds of Love; TJHT; TWS; Hive; The Features; Sufjan Stevens*; 4 Non Blondes*; The Blue Up?*; Gomez; Talk Talk*

* I have albums by these artists
