05 October 2005

2005 Singles I am a big fan of "pop" music, and every year, I compile a CD of all my favourite pop singles. [More:]My definition of "pop" is this - it has to have been played on mainstream radio or television in a somewhat heavy rotation. That is - think Gwen Stefani not New Pornographers. Any genre is ok, but the song must be reasonably good, or at least interesting.

Here is my problem - I am having a hard time this year finding anything worthwhile that was released in 2005, so I come here for help.

What have been your favourite pop songs this year? There is no shame in loving pop music, so don't be shy.

Here are a few of mine to break the ice.

Natasha Bedingfield - These Words (though the verses are terrible, but that CHORUS!!)

Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (obviously)

The Bravery - An Honest Mistake (the closest Morrissey came to the mainstream this year)

Killers - All These Things That I've Done

Nine Inch Nails - Only (I love that this is getting lots of airplay)

Coldplay - Fix You (first half is dreck, the second have is frickin' amazing)

Beck - Girl (the song of the summer)

Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.

Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down (killer hook)

Man I Used to Be - K-Os (got tons of play here in Canada, amazing song)

Man, that Bravery song is amazing, but the rest of their record, well, isn't nearly as amazing.

I'm more partial to the New Pornographers, Yellow Pills, songs-that-SHOULD-be-hits school of pop, myself.

Why on earth would I do that?!? I'm from the other school of pop where the dBs and Shoes are gods and most of the reviews namecheck at least one of the Big Three B's (Beatles, Big Star, and Beach Boys).

I'm not a snob and always find a few dumb radio/MTV pop hits to enjoy, but this year not much has grabbed me.

Did Jem's "They" come out this year?

How about Ashlee Simpson's "La La"?

I love a nice bit of pop but since I never listen to the radio I tend to be hopelessly out of date.

I have not listened to the top 40 station in at least a year, so i am not up to date (I HATE the rap/r&b type stuff they play, not the genres themselves but the stuff that is on the radio). I have no idea if these songs even came out this year, but this is all I have for ya:

green day - boulevard of broken dreams
jack johnson - sitting, waiting, wishing

Black Eyed Peas, "Don't Phunk With My Heart"
Garbage, "Why Do You Love Me"
