Out of Five - Each week a theme, ten songs fitting that theme. Then gone forever. This week, "covers that eclipsed the originals."[More:]
disclosure: this is one of my projects.
I like! So weird - as I'm downloading the Ted Leo version of Since U Been Gone, the Kelly Clarkson version is playing on our radio station here at work.

Okay, I have a dumb question but you can't make fun of me or think I'm stupid.

Why won't the Windows media player let me select "save as"?
posted by Specklet 03 October | 16:01
Specklet, if it won't let you save (I don't use it so I don't know how it works), there are links to the songs under the player, where it says

Download the songs:
01 / 02 / 03 / 04 / 05 / 06 / 07 / 08 / 09 / 10 - you could right click on them and then pick 'save as'.

I like the idea but respectfully disagree with your choices. My picks:

1. The Who - Summertime Blues
2. John Cale - Hallelujah
3. Lambchop - This Corrosion
4. Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
5. Johnny Cash - Mercy Seat
6. The Clash - I Fought The Law
7. Sebadoh - Everybody's Been Burned
8. X - Soul Kitchen
9. 16 horsepower - Bad Moon Risin'
10. Siouxsie And The Banshees - Strange Fruit

Cool idea! *bookmarks* Thanks me3dia! ...and the music MADNESS continues!

Wow, I've been looking for the TV on the Radio cover of "Mr. Grieves" for a while now! Serendipitous!
posted by muddgirl 03 October | 16:12
Well, I'll be, iconomy. I'd thought of that, but didn't try it because I was convinced it would do some weird save-the-link-not-the-file thing.

Thanks. And thanks for not making fun of me and my computer ineptness.

cali, wouldn't any cover by Johnny Cash be better than the original?

I adore Johnny Cash.
posted by tracicle 03 October | 16:18
Only one of the songs was mine, cali. Nine other people contribute, and I cannot vouch for their taste.

You're welcome muddgirl. :)

The mp3 player on the page is actually some weird Javascripty thing. I am not responsible for its operation (my partner in crime is).

cali, wouldn't any cover by Johnny Cash be better than the original?

Well, Johnny's cover of "I'm Son Lonesome I Could Cry," while excellent does not eclipse the original by the mighty Hank Williams.

As for other original eclipsing covers:

1.Twist & Shout - Beatles

I love me some Isley Brothers but the Fab 4's rendition blows the original away. It's one of those rare occasions where the white boy cover was better.

2. Good Lovin' - Young Rascals
3. Devil With a Blue Dress - Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels

See #1

4. Rock & Roll - Detroit (feat. Mitch Ryder)

Mitch's post Wheels hard rock outfit takes on the Velvets classic. Lou Reed has said "That's What I wanted it to sound like in the first place!"

5. I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett

Yes, it's a cover. The Arrows original is a fine stomper, but Joanie buries it.

6. I Got You Babe - Dictators

I like Sonny & Cher, but c'mon, it's Handsome Dick & the boys.

7. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone - Monkees

The original was by an outfit called the W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band. It's good but the PreFab 4 turn it into a classic kiss-off song.

8. All I Really Want To Do - Byrds

The first Dylan cover that transcends Bob.

9. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

The second Dylan cover that transcends Bob.

10. Shimmy Shimmy KoKo Bop - Chicago Line

Drummer Viv Prince's Pre Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band outfit takes Little Anthony's nice little doo-wop number and beat it into bloody submission.

Hey me3dia,

This is awesome. Thank you.

*Music nerd*
THe Mr. Grieves cover is merely equally and differently as awesome as the pixies origional.

as a gift: (yousendit, yada yada yada)

the aforementioned Velvets cover, from the rarest vinyl in my collection (cost me $40):

Detroit (feat. Mitch Ryder) - Rock and Roll

My personal runners-up:

Cake, "I Will Survive"
They took out all the soul, and somehow made it good anyway. I also considered "Sad Songs and Waltzes," originally a Willie Nelson tune sung by Keith Whitley.

Johnny Cash, "Hurt"
Beats the pants off Reznor's version.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Higher Ground"
Maybe not better, but certainly a strong version in its own right. And gets a lot more airplay.

Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U"
Even Prince likes her version better.

(My partner in crime informs me that the music player is in Flash, not Java. Here's where he got it.)

me3dia, this is a terrific idea. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Surfin' USA - Jesus and Mary Chain
posted by Hugh Janus 03 October | 17:14
Yes yes, I am very happy.
posted by Specklet 03 October | 17:17
1. Fiona Apple, Across the Universe
2. Aerosmith, Come Together
3. Jawbox, Cornflake Girl
4. Fountains of Wayne, Baby One More Time
5. Cowboy Junkies, Sweet Jane (sorry, Lou)
6. Season to Risk does a better version of Neil Young's Don't Cry (and I like Neil Young)
7? Pretty much anything by the Minibosses, if that counts

I won't say "eclipsed" on any of these; it's all personal preference. Yeah, the Beatles suck as a band, but not songwriters, I guess (since I seem to like their music when performed by someone else, even Aerosmith).

You should follow it up with originals that are little-known but better than the cover, like Pylon's "Crazy" (later covered by R.E.M.). Though my friend who is actually an R.E.M. fan (and yet still my friend!) likes the cover better.
posted by Eideteker 03 October | 17:42
10. Shimmy Shimmy KoKo Bop - Chicago Line

I have a friend in a band that does a really good cover of this ... but you'll never hear it because I'm not allowed to upload any of their music! :-(
posted by WolfDaddy 03 October | 17:49
2. Aerosmith, Come Together

Blasphemer. If you're gonna pick a cover of that song, at least make it Soundgarden's, dude.

on preview: Wolfie there's no way it could top the Chicago Line's version.

and here it is, for proof.
posted by jonmc 03 October | 17:52
Oh my god, jon, that's awesome.
posted by Specklet 03 October | 17:57
The Mitch Ryder or the Chicago Line? I think both are, but Mitch gets the nod as an absolute classic.
posted by jonmc 03 October | 17:58
Most excellent - thanks.

Awesome, me3dia!
posted by deborah 03 October | 18:18
And, one more transcendent cover

Etta James - I Got You Babe

I love the original, but Etta somehow manages to make it funky and I mean funkier that thirty miles of chitlins soaked in hot sauce.
posted by jonmc 03 October | 18:34
New England - Kirsty MacColl
Crazy Mary - Pearl Jam
Romeo and Juliet - Indigo Girls
Common People - William Shatner (not better, but loads more fun)
posted by seanyboy 03 October | 18:35
I would like to change my opinion on the Kirsty MacColl cover. It was better when I was 17 maybe, but memory is a harsh mistress and it appears as if my tastes have changed.
posted by seanyboy 03 October | 18:43
thank you
posted by ethylene 03 October | 18:46
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson (Not sure, as the original rocks for different reasons)
posted by seanyboy 03 October | 18:51
'Hotel California,' by the Gypsy Kings. The 12" of Tainted Love morphs into a a nice version of "Where did our love go?" about half way through.

Jawbox, Cornflake Girl

I am pretty certain that I do not have an mp3 of this. Surely SOMEONE here does, eh? EH EH EH?
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 03 October | 19:08
Richard Barone's version of "Cry Baby Cry" is one of the few Beatles/John Lennon covers that I actually like better than the original...
posted by Slack-a-gogo 03 October | 20:20
Johnny Cash? Love him, but is there anything AL GREEN can't improve on??
posted by Carbolic 03 October | 20:23
My favorite cover is Uncle Tupelo's take on CCR's "Effigy".
posted by goatdog 03 October | 23:16
wuc: I surely do.
posted by Eideteker 04 October | 01:10
Wow, ditto on Cowboy Junkies' Sweet Jane, and Gypsy Kings Hotel California (though the reversal of style is partly why it's so good, and that relies on the original).

Mine would be Big Sugar's cover of Let It Ride.
posted by dreamsign 04 October | 05:07
Thanks!
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 04 October | 09:21
Speaking of Sugar, is it too late to mention Hüsker Dü's cover of the Mary Tyler Moore theme?
posted by Eideteker 04 October | 12:45
Oh yeah, that reminds me, Faith No More do a kickass live version of the Nestle White commercial jingle.
