First Billy Cobham (with a very young Tommy Bolin) doing "Quadrant 4," followed by Gene Krupa's "Drum Boogie."

Followed by the greatest skin-pounder in history, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie first with vibes ace Cal Tjader and then his own "Soul Drums."

Pretty much every drummer I know considers these guys Gods down from Olympus, and it ain't hard to see why. Enjoy.

ah, whatever. Here's one of the odder (but still quite enjoyable) moments in rock history. A Brazilian hard rock bands tribute to a black Irish hard rock legend. (although, the tributee was of half-Brazilian ancestry, so maybe it's not so odd. eh, good song and a good tribute to a great band anyway)

I'm kidding. But nobody mentioned what they thought of the tunes I posted, and Bernard Purdie is indeed the best. drummer. ever.

By the way, my mother (though frequently wasted and often full of shit) told me once that the orgasmic power of Billy Cobham's drumming was responsible for my conception. Dunno what that says about my father's bedroom skills, but I've maintained a certain debt of gratitude to the drummer throughout my life.

heh. The closest family tale I've got to that is my mom telling me that the Stones version of "Time Is on My Side," was her "make out song," back in the day. But, as I've mentioned before, my parents first date was at the White Castle on Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside, so I have murderburgers to thank for my conception.

On further listening, the pronunciation of "silencio" with a "th" sound suggests they are from Spain.

I'm not sure where I got the idea that they were Brazilian, except maybe because of Lynott's Afro-Brazilian ancestry.

Actually I can easily imagine them doing a Phil Lynott tribute, or at least a cover, back in the Max Cavalera days.

It's Monday morning here but it's too nice to go to work. Maybe I'll just listen to music...

and Lynott reminds me of one of my best high school delinquent buddies. He was the son of an Irish-American mother and a Puerto Rican father who disappeared before he was born. He was a bass player, and an exceptionally charming guy, and he had curly hair not unlike Lynott's or Slash's (so much that one of his nicknames in high school was "Slash"), I remember he ever charmed my insane Catholic mom, who loved him. But when he helped me and pips (who loved him too) move into our first apartment, he confided about the preacher's daughter he'd been dating, "I got her pregnant." he went to work for roto-rooter not long after. Later, I'd heard they divorced and that he'd become a full time drunk. I hope he's finally found some peace. There's a whole lot more history between me and him but I'll save that for another time.
