Garnering Opinion Is it just me, or is Jennifer Garner... umm, y'know, not pretty? I like my girls with curves, personally, but she is ALL ANGLES. In this era of anti-gay legislation, isn't it odd that the conception of what's sexually attractive has shifted towards the mannish (or even manly)?
Mansome?
posted by Eideteker 01 October | 11:21
Tons of current female celebs are mannish--strong jaws and very bony. The dangerous thinness has exacerbated it i think.

Connelly verges on drag queen. A lot of them do--boys/men with boobs, and broad shoulders.

and Nicolette Sheridan definitely is a drag queen. ; >

I'm with you on Jennifer Garner, man. I men she's pretty and all, but I go more for the curvy ladies myself. Maybe it's cause I'm a skinny guy and I wouldn't want to bump uglies with a body that feels like mine.

Real women have Curves.  I saw the play, so I know.
posted by teece 01 October | 11:52
Jennifer Connelly used to be hot. I mean, she's always had the thick eyebrows and the moustache, but now she just looks like another freakish Hollywood psychotic surgical experiment. Like a $2 Demi Moore.

While I'm at it, does anyone else see a resemblance between Cameron Diaz and Janice from the muppet show? Actually, she looks a bit more like Dr. Teeth or even the Reach Fliptop head guy (can't find a picture of him). All teeth and a hinge at the back of her head...

Male or female, anything that looks strong and healthy, I find attractive and with the exception of height, anything that is hugely exaggerated looks goofy to me. But I gotta say, a woman with nice, juicy curves makes me proud.

Hell, kellydamnit, mrs.jonmc has said that she's overheard her female students talking about trying to gain weight to get curvier hips and butts.
posted by jonmc 01 October | 12:32
Jennifer Garner has a funny-shaped head. David Edelstein from Slate.com described her best:

"That face is really strange—long and fish-lipped, with different planes going at different angles. She's like a Picasso guppy."
posted by goatdog 01 October | 12:38
OK, that I have never heard. I think it may be a cultural difference, though. The guys I know who are into super-skinny girls all tend to be white. Most of the Hispanic and African-American guys I know prefer curvier girls.

And as usual, the brothers are ahead of the curve. Italian-Americans are honorary Latinos, so maybe it's my Mediterranean heritage talking. But the mrs.'s school is indeed overwhelmingly Black and Latino.

I disagree. In a superficial way (noticed the moustache). I like the character she plays in Alias (is she doing something else and Australia hasn't seen it yet?). The role she plays is interesting - ethically, morally and strength-wise is hot.

You're welcomedammit.

Queen Latifah's a good example of an attractive woman (and that's not just my Black half talking). She's confident and self-assured IN ADDITION TO being built like a brick shithouse. I do indeed think of her and no one else when I hear that Commodores song. She's mighty mighty.

A lovely lady is a lady who loves herself. Two of my biggest turn-ons (when did this turn into a Playboy bio/Penthouse forum?) are confidence and comedy. I always had a thing for Madeline Kahn.

tellurian: She was in the godawful Daredevil, and the even more horiffic Electra.

jonmc: As an Italian-American, I know what you mean. No doubt that I feel more at home around my Puerto Rican and Cuban friends' families than those of my European-decent friends (well, other than the Italians.).

Indeed. Remember that Living Single show? Latifah and Kim Coles. Nasty fantasies were hatched. (also, the guy who played Overton would've made a great Norton in that ill-advised Honeymooners remake. I love Cedric the Entertainer, and think he's perfect for Ralph, but you don't fuck with perfection.

Side note: I've been listening to early J.Geils Band all afternoon- "Musta Got Lost," "Ain't Nothin' But a Houseparty," "Give It To Me," that kinda stuff-and I've come to the conclusion that they were the last great greaser-rock band.

Man, thanks for the song, Jon. Now I'm gonna have to sell me Bob Marley records and get me some Jackson Browne.

Oh, don't do that. P2P the Jackson Browne. I like him, but Marley records are in a class by themselves, as are Jackson 5 records. (I am of the firm belief that the Michael Jackson who sang those songs was kidnapped by aliens to entertain the populace of Quorthon 7, and was replaced by the cosmetically altered pederast we know as 'Michael Jackson')

You need to hear Marvin Gaye's version of "Yesterday." He takes the most cliched Beatles song in existence and reminds you why it's a classic.

As a bonus, here's (his Majesty) Stevie Wonder's version of "We Can Work It Out."

On preview: I haven't kept up with weird al like I should. I'm so ashamed. (Although I did meet him at LaGuardia airport when I was 13. he was cool.)

I love that Stevie Wonder cover. Sadly, growing up in the 80s, I thought of Stevie Wonder as the "I Just Called to Say I Love You" guy. I've finally come to my senses; I recently picked up Fulfillingness' First Finale and Innervisions.

If the mp3 blog idea coalesces, that just might happen in a roundabout way. I just need some wiz to whip up a great design and to iron out hosting details.

(at this point the entire collection 12135 songs is 42.2 gigs, anyone got some spare server space?)

My exwife/girlfriend (don't ask) describes it as looking "hard". I'm attracted to women on the petite/slim side but I like the softer look. Jennifer Garner has the look of a very pretty youngman in his early twenties.
posted by Carbolic 01 October | 14:53
1. I don't know who Jennifer Garner is... Is she famous as an actress? Model? Physicist?

2. Jon, I have a design that I whipped up back when we were talking about "hot buttered flannel" (the text is just something I copy-pasted to show the basic look). If you like it, I can set that up for you once you get the hosting. (The stuff on the right is supposed to be sort of representational discs - like records or cds, not that anyone is supposed to figure that out necessarily). Also if it doesn't appeal to you for any reason, my feelings won't be hurt!

OK, just to wake everybody the fuck up, here's the aforementioned last great greaser rock band with their combustible live cover of the Showstoppers' "Houseparty" and their original "Must of Got Lost" with a badass spoken intro.

Boogie, you fools!

On preview: I love it, taz. Lemme talk to my hosting contact and see if we cant dress this monkey in gingham and teach it to type. Now, grap those tunes and get down witchoo bad self!

I don't think that Jennifer is a classic beauty or even pretty would describe her, but she is attractive and looks healthy. I think her unique brunette look gives her an edge and makes her look more interesting if anything, same for Jennifer Connelly.

I have a strong preference for skinny women. Not sure why, wish it were otherwise, but there ya' go. One suspicion I have about it is that my preferences in women, both physically and otherwise, were cemented from a two-year long intense crush I had on a girl in eighth and ninth grade. So, anyway, I do think Garner is attractive. Thgough she's a little too glamorous for my taste—I'm definitely a "girl-next-door" kinda guy.

I find her absurdly attractive, but I think it's largely because of the character she plays in Alias; strong, confident, dedicated and able to handle anything that comes her way.

Otherwise I'd think she was a sexy girl who'd be sexier if she'd eat a sandwich.
posted by mosch 01 October | 18:28
My mom's a huge Alias fan, but she can't stand Garner (she's in it for the men ... so am I, come to think of it) because she says the lady's shoulder blades are freakish. I tend to agree. However, she'll fill out during and after her pregnancy. Nature always wins.

However most of the straight men I know are hot for her because of her, uh, DSL. If you don't know what that is, I'm not telling you.

me, i like a girl that's girly
if i wanted a girl
but it's not really the parts that matter
mostly i think it ends up in how one moves
or conducts themselves
if we're talkin sexy

i saw a cover of gwenyth paltrow after she had the kid i didn't recognize her at first, but i thought she looked totally different and way more attractive. (she's one of those people i will watch despite a general dislike for some reason, i blame sensing contrivence--)
and i always thought jennifer connely was pretty but i think she's gotten moreso, but not for any weight changes

[this is a horrible, horribly typical story of me, but after seeing someone from high school after fifteen years, i immediately launched into how relaxed and great she looked as she was so thin and strained in school, but i never knew the bulimia jokes were true because i never believed anyone's rumors. oops. she seemed happily content about the whole thing, but come to think of it i always end up thinking well of people who are no longer bony as they always seem calmer. vata something stuff no doubt. i am a bit buzzed and need to return phone calls, sorry]

The glorious thing about human beauty is its unpredictability and variability. There are so many ways for women to be beautiful. Garner is gorgeous, as is Marissa Tomei.

The pendulum has swung so far away from "supermodel on a cocaine diet = sexy" that now, any woman who happens to be skinny gets told that her body is not what a real woman's body looks like.

There is no one way that every woman's body should look. Jennifer Garner has a lean and sexy look which suits her, and while her face contains an excess of angles, it's also home to her beautiful eyes, her button nose, her wide smile. She so damn fricking cute.

Am I the only one who thinks the show Alias is laughable in it's soap-opera-style outragous plots where everyone is related, annoying arrogant hop-skips into foreign lands to blow X up or grab Y (yah, sure, we'll let your US Hercules planes fly above our airspaces without any diplomatic hub-bub y'all own the world, no fucking problem) and that Jennifers charachter is a bad rip-off of Lola in Lola rennt? I watch the show on occasion but only for my own amusement, hoping to spot a really bad line or laugh at Jennifers sad accents when she speaks some other language. Sortof like when I watch the latest 24 where Jack Bauer gets word from some hacker that "there's notes in the code, written in arabic or possibly turkish." HAAAAHAAA! Yes those two are so easily confused. Jebus there's some bad script writers working these days. Which isn't suprising I just wish my channels would stop buying the crud.

(it's the whole "lets give Jen a red wig" thing and "lets have her run lots in the first episode" that makes me think they based their whole pitch when they created the show on Lola rennt. It's "demo-love" showing through to the final product. Ick.)

OK... my 2 cents.

Jennifer Garner- no. Not for me anyhoo. I like what Hollywood throws at me, but it's just what Hollywood throws. jonmc- that Valerie Lefkowitz is definitely hawt but I'm going out on a limb here- it's about personality gasp!

The problem comes when you specialise. It's like a cross between racism and sexim. "I only am attracted to skinny girls" or "I only like Asians".

It's what's inside. Really.

I've been out with many a girl of all shapes and sizes and yes, I worry about what my friends think. Because they think wrong and judge on appearance.

I could go on but hey, don't miss out on a great person because of some ideal that's not yours.

When I look back at my boyfriends, redheads, italians, hungarians, scottish, japanese, sierra leonian, tall, short, wide, muscular, rounder, fit as a fiddle, dancers, fashion model looks, boy-next-door looks, blond, brunette the only thing they had in common is that they all had penises. ;)

"Am I the only one who thinks the show Alias is laughable in it's soap-opera-style outragous plots where everyone is related..."

It is silly, but the first (and maybe the second) season was pretty good because it made up for the silliness with some other virtues.

"bdave, that's the only sensible way to go."

I've dated women of all body types and looks (but, oddly, no blondes even though I do think blondes are particularly attractive for some reason) and how I've felt about them in all ways excepting sexual attractiveness has been based entirely upon their personality and our compatibility. However, I've found to my frustration and regret that a considerable amount of my sexual attraction to a woman is apparently hardwired to be dependent upon body type. This has caused problems and while I've decided that pure sexual attraction should play a very strong role in my decision in selecting a partner, I've nevertheless found it difficult to allow myself to let that be a deciding factor.

When I do personals ads relationships, both newspaper and online, I find I am very reluctant to ask a woman to send me a photo or even ask what she looks like. If there's a description and/or photo in the ad, I assume that's what she looks like and I'm in no hurry for more detail. I'm always very strongly focused on getting to know one another and seeing if she's the kind of person I can imagine being very close to. Most men, I think, are very eager to get photos and I think that my failure to ask for photos unnerves many women. I freely offer mine, so it's not that they think I'm avoiding it because I don't want them to see what I look like.

So, intellectually and emotionally I'm very non-focused on physical beauty. But in terms of pushing those sexual buttons, it does matter a lot to me. The result is that I've often been confused and my partners have been confused and it's been problematic.

Dude, that's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. There is a current of that thought, yes, but if anything it's put the pendulum close to the middle.

Anyway, to me there's a difference between girls who are just built slim and those who look underfed and you can tell. I hate that I was twenty-two before I ever thought that my body could be hot, and I'd hate for girls who are slim to have the same experience in the future. So I'd like to see the pundulum in the middle. But the chubby chicks have not taken over the world, so stop pretending that the thin sre horribly oppressed.
posted by dame 02 October | 11:55
Oh, pardon the end of that. I was up at seven to swim, so I am making less sense than usual. I really mean more along the lines of: I wish people would stop pretending that because things are slightly more equal, the thin are now being made to feel bad. It's like when white people or men get upset that they have less privilege: it seems worse because you don't have as much as you did, but really you never deserved what you had.
posted by dame 02 October | 12:04
I'm really all for everyone getting their little piece of equality. But the feminine ideal hasn't expanded, it's just shifted with regards to weight. Yes, there's lots of gray area, but overall curvy is in, thin is out, as far as popular opinion goes. And people say more things like "She needs to eat a sandwich" and "I like my women to look like women" and "Real women aren't shaped like that", and less things like "She'd be cute if she lost 15 pounds". I think that everyone deserves to not have to hear that their body-type should not be associated with their gender, that shouldn't be a privelege that we have to take away from one group to give to another.
