MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
A new poster kept signing his comments (but he'd only made three comments, poor guy), and there was a meta thread about it, in which lots of silliness ensued, and some meanness, as well, when the poster was "outed" for no particular reason. Then the thread was closed, then the thread was deleted, then the front page post was made, then deleted.
Let's just say that it appears that pretty much the worst thing one can do at mefi is sign your comments. Worse than killing baby bunnies or punching your mama.
I really don't think most people have the intention of being cruel, but just don't take the time to consider the ramifications, or to imagine themselves in a similar situation.
Sigs bear the stench of treacly BBSes with animated GIF avatars, or obscure newsgroups with arcane titles that languish amidst porn binary feeds and referrer spam. And that makes baby internets cry.
I was in there joking around, but in a fuck with the new guy way. Which is something I believe in (to a degree). But then that whole weird business came up and I felt squicked and said as much. The whole thing felt like a spirited rough horseplay session in the sixth grade where someone finally gets hurt and everyone stops and wanders off feeling sorta ashamed, even if they didn't do anything wrong.
I do wonder why people sign there posts when it is clearly not done on Mefi, do the people who do it not read what other people write, do they not lurk for a minute first?
Lord knows, I've been on mefi since 2002 and I have just about the same amount of comments here and there, not that I read every day and didn't post, for years, but still. If I go into a house and everyone takes off their shoes, I take off my damn shoes too.
Personally for me, I am gonna lay off the roughhousing for a while.
I wasn't all that crazy about the outing, truth be known. It was much funnier when no one knew who he was and it was just a random silly signoff. And I didn't see any "noob bashing" going on either (well there may have been one or two posts that were less than polite). I thought most of the people doing it were just fond of the name and the peculiar way he went about posting.
I think Divine_Wino is right though. Now that he's been outed it's just not as much fun. Emperor Fabulous
Yeah... no, it's not the teasing; that was kind of funny. It was the digging up off-site real world info that may or may not have to do with the person.
It kinda made my TL sock puppet useless. Oh well. If the "real" TL wants his account with his FULL name, he can have it. That way, his posts will sign themselves.
Yeah, I did feel bad about digging up that 'dirt' about him, but I was only looking for other posts that he'd signed with his name. And to be honest I mean he was using his own full name. On the other hand, It was intresting to find that out about him... And he has such a funny name.
I also wonder if him posting his name on all of his comments is sort of a way for google to 'erase' that information about him. In other words, before he posted all those comments all over the interweb the only google results would have been about Ticketwhatever and about his court case.
But who knows. He really didn't have much to say. He hasn't responded to any of this, so we have no idea how he feels.
