Pop [some NSFW adverts]. How do they get these shots. Is it all in the timing?
They look like lab geeks. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had a set up to trigger the camera when they pop the balloon, and the camera probably takes many shots, not just one. That said, with a decent pro-level SLR, it is easy to take 8 frames a second, so if one were patient it would be possible to get such shots without any special triggering set up.
I like how there are some people who expect the pop, but still look taken aback, and some who are reacting with horror, and some who, in successive pictures, seem to be mastering their blinking and facial reaction. All except the first guy, who appears to have popped many a balloon in his career.
They look like pretty tough balloons, too. That rubber can go flying -- looks like it's sharp enough to cut hair.
I'll second boringpostcards. Having worked in a sport science lab I can tell you that those are likely stills from a high speed camera, biomechanists rely on them heavily for their science.
