Ask Mecha (not about Caractacus's uniform) How can I play a .wmv (Windows Media) movie on a Mac (Tiger OS)? Will any of the built-in apps do it? Can I avoid installing the official Windows player for Mac?
MPlayer

Hugh Janus: furries delenda est.

papercake: nice and thanks. But should wmvs be able to play using the standard Tiger install??

orthogonality: I don't think so.

Ortho: Yes, Mplayer should have loaded (at least, it did in Jaguar) native. However, it lacks a bunch of codecs.
So, you should download VLC and the WMP if you want to be sure that you can play 70% of the .wmvs out there (as the other 30% don't play even if you have all the codecs they say you need).
This is mostly because .wmv is a shitty, shitty format.

Flip4Mac's WMV Player is what you're looking for. It will let you play windows media files using Quicktime. The only thing is it costs $9.99 but is well worth it in my opinion.
