Wow, I didn't find the apocalypse too crunchy! Mispeakings. (avocado in this case)
My little brother was a great source of these, and he never could understand that we weren't laughing *at* him:

"Ball barians" for "ball bearings", "weidor" for "weirdo", and, one precious time, "Bavarian cancer".

My sister also once heard some local yokels commenting on the "Ester Laudee" perfume in a shop window.

Also game: things you think you heard and definitely weren't said. Counselled teen looking in magazine: "Wow, a million pounds of cats! Free!" and I'm all "Uh, yeah, that's a lot of cats!"

*doubletake*

"Huh??? I said 'A million bucks in cash -- free!"

Watching Little House on the Prairie, some guy was having a heart attack or something. My 5-yr-old sister asked, with great concern, "Is he fussering?"

I'm pretty sure I've said this elsewhere, but some of my favorites came via a friend's Portuguese immigrant grandmother: "Bastards & Rabbits" (Baskin Robbins), "Rolling Rose" (Rolls Royce)... and a bunch of other fantabulous ones I can't remember right now.

my nonna's method of calling me to dinner- "Come in da chicken!" stands alone, methinks.

Ha. Bastards & Rabbits. I'd definitely eat Bastards & Rabbits ice cream.

(Can't think of any of my own at the moment. I'll try and think harder.)

The best thing was how she pronounced it: "bah-stids"... and if you hear it that way, it's even more euphonious with "rabbits".

My brother used to say "biz" instead of "beacause". One time he even wrote it "biz", and when I asked him why he spelled it that way, he said "Biz that's the way you say it!"
