Shitty video and a worse codec (VHS -> WMV) And a despicable decade. But it's some interesting John McLaughlin and great guitar playing. Feel free to add links. He is a new musician to me, and I like what I see. :-)
Are we talking about the 70's or the 80's? The 80's were far more despicable than the 70's IMHO.

I haven't had time to make up my mind! I am astonished by the visual stereo of the video he does with the guy... er. Fuck.

Amazing! I have been trying to show my students that for ever!

and I love me some John McLaughlin, BTW. One of the greatest guitarists ever.

Yes indeed, and sorry for such a terrible representation here. But I had to watch a lot of that and it was wonderful. Can somebody please come up with a better video codec? Why is QT considered so bad? Windows Media is pixelating and anti-frameing everything. What is a fill maker to do? (Don't answer that.)

Link: "During this period (either late 1972 or early 1973), John (McLaughlin) and Shankar played with Zakir Hussain, whom John had met earlier because of his association and meetings with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. These trio sessions were so genre bending and musically satisfying that John had the idea of forming Shakti as a formal group."

Cryptical Envelopment, you need to listen to "Tribute to Jack Johnson", Miles Davis' soundtrack for said movie. Also quite good, and somewhat obscure as well, is Carla Bley's "Escalator Over the Hill". These both have some incredible playing by John McLaughlin. (musicians on escalator over the hill are varied from Jack Bruce and Linda Ronstadt to Charlie Haden and Don Cherry) These were recorded in the period from 1968-1971, and quite simply are incredibly powerful electric guitar performances. Especially amazing considering the time. They blow me away now, and especially so when put into context. (Tribute to Jack Johnson also includes some uncredited Sonny Sharrock, which will stand out if you know his idiosyncratic style.) I saw John McLaughlin in concert a couple of years ago playing electric, and he's still got it.
