Valmeyer, IL moved (the whole town!) 2 miles. To escape flooding. The US Gov paid to move the town. A story of rebuilding and weird hope. Ignominiously posted to MeFi with nary a comment, but the story is a really good one. (The article is good too.)
No more nary.

Thanks safetyfork. I mostly just wanted people to see that article, which I think is fascinating and topical. (I was kind of hoping that the post would scroll away with no comments.)

Those are great links, omiewise. Figuring out how to re-house millions in more energy-efficient homes is a crucial question that has potentially great relevance for energy design and future energy policy. It would be ironic if, after Katrina destroyed the Gulf coast, the re-housing program destroyed millions of acres with badly-built, speculative sprawl. I'll send this to MeFi, too, once the server starts respondng again ...

I suspected that may even be a possibility, but the links were good and I appreciated them. I couldn't resist commenting.
