I'm Going to Die of a Shin Bruise Or, How Do I Stop Being Such a Hypocondriac Because Being Convinced I'm Going to Die of Stupid Things Is Both Disruptive and Boring?
Just think: We've made it this far. In previous centuries, people lived through amputations sans anesthetic. People lived through primitive medical techniques that involved plunging ceramic rods into their brains. People have lived through lots of shitty things.

Factor into that that your stuff probably isn't nearly so shitty, and that medical science has evolved past the point of ceramic rods and leeches, and you're practically invincible.

I have become sensitized to a threat I had before never perceived: looming buildings. I fear falling concrete. I cannot explain why this is.

But mudpuppie is right. You've beat danger at every turn and come out clean, and will do so again. But then I'm a determinist, so really, I believe that if you were meant to live to 147, as unlikely as that is, you will, and if you were meant to live to 3 months, you'd be gone already. There's no way to know. Just live... (and watch out for falling concrete :)

Growing up in earthquake country, California, being in concrete/stone/glass canyons gives me the heebie jeebies. Heck, going into a Home Depot or a grocery store or anyone's house that has too many loose, heavy objects laying around or overhead does the same things.

It was drilled into me and my siblings by my mom to always look for exists, be aware of what was over you, and always know where you could go to seek shelter from falling/flying debris.

After a while it just becomes second nature. Even though I'm not there in SoCal anymore I note where emergency exits are and where there's sturdy shelter to duck and cover. As long as it doesn't become an unhealthy obsession it's a good skill to foster.

Oh, btw dame: I have a shin scar/bruise that's existed for about 4 years now. I gave it to myself skating the old, crappy public skatepark in Austin, TX, trying to do a handplant transfer between two small, toy-like quarterpipe ramps. I overshot and slammed my shin down on the broken-up plywood edge of the ramp.

I'm pretty sure that there's still a couple of chips of plywood in there. It's not really bruised so much as it just refuses to heal properly and is always itching and/or flaking off half-assed scar tissue.

On the other had, I had a sore calf muscle checked out a week or so back and found a blood clot that needed to be dealt with. So, while it's foolish to think everything is going to kill you, it's probably a good idea to get stuff checked out just in case it might mess you up. I refuse to think my blood clot would have killed me, but I'm glad I'm getting it taken care of.

I have no insurance, so "getting things checked out" falls into the "be sure it has a high probability of being a problem because you don't want to waste hundreds of dollars on paranoia" category.
