And then there's this.

You know, I agree that the Bush administration's response to Katrina is a colossal cock-up, but it's not because we're currently in Iraq. We still have thousands and thousands of National Guard troops and helicopters and other equipment within a day of the affected areas, and they simply weren't activated until days after the crisis got out of control. They weren't even letting the Red Cross into New ORleans, for Christ's sake.

It was totally clear that Bush was monumentally unqualified to be President two days after he declared his candidacy. With Cheney now nowhere to be seen (could we be getting another 'surprising' death announcement before the end of the year?), it is clear that there are no 'grown-ups' in charge of the country anymore, only W's old drinking buddies and people who have done him big (and usually illegal) favors. We are almost certain of having to deal with more disasters before Congress can be forced into some kind of oversight, either natural (hurricane season has two more months to go) or terrorist (we have just demonstated how badly we handle such matters, making us a more tempting target), and a deepening national crisis is likely to get one simple reaction from the sociopathic George W.; to declare Martial Law for the entire country and cancel the 2006 elections that would force him to face a hostile New Congress. Actually, when Bush was first (s)elected, I believed that American Democracy was doomed. The only thing that has changed is that the Bushites have lost their Public Relations figleafs and are revealed as the pricks that they are.

You know, I never felt quite comfortable making comments like this at MeFi...

I love that "Weapons of Mass Destruction" is a front-page theme on that site, and that there's "Currently no top story for this theme"...
