Stuff happens. "W. drove his budget-cutting Chevy to the levee, and it wasn't dry. Bye, bye, American lives."[More:]Am I the only one that thinks Maureen Dowd's op-ed today is offensive?

Not on the same scale as the rest of this clusterfuck, and I agree with all the points she's making, but man, poor taste and bad writing. (This might be related to the fact that her writing in general is nails on the chalkboard for me.)
americans are dying in a huge vat of toxic sewage filled with dead bodies. americans are being held prisoner in piles of filth by the national guard. the american president is a simpering chucklehead mugging for cameras. americans have swallowed whole a pack of lies about increased security and readiness for disaster. corporate theives are looting the citizenry.

no, i can't say i'm the least bit concerned about maureen dowd. what's your fucking excuse?

Considering that thousands of people have died *since* Katarina as a consequence of the callous smug indifference displayed by everybody from Bush down, I think it's kind of understated and restrained.

completely understated and restrained.

Carbolic, you realize i hope, that this is exactly the response we'll see the next time there's a terror attack--or a natural disaster? If you're ok with that, then i don't know what to say.

Regarding writing style, I think it's gone beyond sober statements of facts. Almost everyone I talk to is angry beyond belief at this.

I am angry about the whole situation. I was just offended by the trite way that she worded it. I don't think it's appropriate.

But obviously I'm the only one, I should go back to worrying about other things, whatever.

q. has a point -- the reaction to this disaster is trying to pretend the situation is under control, with a carefully coreographed photo-op here and there, and your problem is that Dowd's writing is shrill?

The government's inaction about this whole thing is just more proof that the Department of Homeland Security is a pile of shit.

I agree completely with Dowd and in fact would liked it to have been more fierce.

But I didn't really like it because all her columns sound alike. It's like she's phoning it in.

I've considered Dowd a crappy writer for years. This is more crappy writing for a good cause, yet one of those things that gives enemies of humanity like Carbolic aid and comfort by its crappiness (like the Sunday Doonesbury about Jane Fonda, not online yet...)

Over the top Monday morning quarterbacking.
Except it's not Monday Morning, it's halftime in the Hurricane Season, and considering Bush's total inability to learn from his mistakes, it is likely to happen all over again before the end of November. THAT's what makes me so angry and so scared.

I've been freaking out about Katrina and the clusterfuck surrounding it all week. I guess reading that op-ed and interpreting it as being flippant kind of pushed me over the edge. (That and my friend who drools over every word out of Dowd's mouth, but that's a different story.)

I'm just really frustrated and angry because I feel so useless and wasteful. I wish I could do more than donate money. And yes, worried about more hurricanes... we're already up to M.

we all do, strike--just donate more or something. the kids need school supplies down there too.
