Anyone watching the NBC telethon? Kanye West just did a bit of an ad lib on live television and ended with: "George Bush hates the black man." Mike Meyers looked like he was gong to punch him in the face.
Right, 'cept he said "George Bush doesn't care about black people." But holy crap either way.

full text: "I hate the way they portray us in the media.

If you see a black family it says they are looting if you see a white family it says they are looking for food.

And you know that it's been 5 days because most of the people are black and even for me to complain..I would be a hyporcrite because I would turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before giving a donation and so right now I'm calling my business manager what is the biggest amount I can give."

"And just to imagine if I was down there, those are my people down there. So anybody out there who wants to help with the set up, the way that America is set up to help..The poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. I mean, Red Cross is doing everything they can.

We already realize alot of the people that could help are at war now fighting another way and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

(Mike Meyers trys to get back on prompter, reads from script and then camera cuts back to Kayne. He pauses before:)

Kanye West: "Geoge Bush doesn't care about black people."

Then camera abruptly switches to another black actor, Chris Tucker who dutifully reads off prompter....

Listeners wonder what 'Jock-A-Mo' means. Some music scholars say it translates in Mardi Gras Indian lingo as 'Kiss my ass,' and I’ve read where some think Jock-A-Mo was a court jester.

Good for you, Kanye West.

This just in from the AP...
Rhetoric Not Matching in Relief "The Iraqi insurgency is in its last throes. The economy is booming. Anybody who leaks a CIA agent's identity will be fired. Add another piece of White House rhetoric that doesn't match the public's view of reality: Help is on the way, Gulf Coast.

As New Orleans descended into anarchy, top Bush administration officials congratulated each other for jobs well done and spoke of water, food and troops pouring into the ravaged city. Television pictures told a different story.

'What it reminded me of the other day is "Baghdad Bob" saying there are no Americans at the airport,' said Rich Galen, a Republican consultant in Washington. He was referring to Saddam Hussein's reality-challenged minister of information who denied the existence of U.S. troops in the Iraqi capital.

To some critics, President Bush seemed to deny the existence of problems with hurricane relief this week. He waited until Friday to acknowledged that 'the results are not acceptable,' and even then the president parsed his words.

Republicans worry that he looks out of touch defending the chaotic emergency response.

'It's impossible to defend something like this happening in America,' said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

'No one can be happy with the kind of response which we've seen in New Orleans,' said Republican Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.

Bush got himself in trouble by trying to put the best face on a horrible situation. The strategy is so common in Washington that operatives have a name for it, 'spin,' and the Bush White House has perfected the shady art."
Fuck you, George Bush!

Kanye West's comment was the only thing that stopped me mid sob from an uncontrollable crying jag after Aaron Neville's Louisiana. That bit of honesty was one of those rare wonderful unscripted TV moments - I thought Mike Meyers was gonna die, hahaha. Mike was watching him through the whole speech - he knew a bomb was going to drop.

It'll be interesting to see if Kanye survives the "West Coast Tape Delay" of the show...

Just saw it. Wow. (Who is Kanye West?)

someone who probably won't be on any other red cross telethons on national television for a long, long time. oh, and he's also a singer.

I just saw the repeat of it on CNBC, and guess what? They edited that comment out.

NBC responds: "Tonight's telecast was a live television event wrought with emotion. Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

(Who is Kanye West?)

He's on the cover of Time Magazine this week (Why You Can't Ignore Kanye), is featured in the Village Voice (A Darker Shade of Pink: From Kanye West to Louis Farrakhan, new signs of gay friendliness among African Americans) this week, and is getting pretty good reviews for his recently released sophmore album.

NBC didn't need to apologize for Kanye's comment, did they? These are charged moments. He said something that a lot of people are thinking.

I don't understand the censoring... I was watching wdsu (New Orleans) streaming news this morning, and it eventually switched over to NBC morning news on which they covered the Kanye incident, but only the part about looting versus looking for food...

The fact is that he made a remark about the president, and that is what people are talking about, yet they won't cover this "news". Why? How much other news that may not be flattering about the president aren't they telling you? And why not? Bush is simply a lowly elected representative, not a divine figure or a dictator who can just order his detractors executed. He is just a man who is supposed to be serving you (U.S. residents).

So it's just taken as read now, even in the AP, that they're just lying about everything?

Also, NBC: grow a pair.
