Rasterbation. [More:]

Has anyone Rasterbated? Was it good for you?

Here's the Rasterbator site, and the amazing gallery, which has kept me occupied for hours. Here's a flickr page of Rasterbated images, too.

What's the best way to finish the image? Laminating? Framing? Something else? I want them to look really pro on the wall.
Hot wax or repositionable glue stick onto foamcore?

Trim sheets on overlap with razor knife (as in photomosaic)?

I rasterbated twice, right when the rasterbator got started. Xiu Xiu for Life and Vice Cooler, both of which are still where I originally put them

As you can see, Xiu Xiu was my first one, I got a lot better at it with Vice Cooler. I'd like to do more eventually.

puke & cry, I love the Vice Cooler! So with Xiu Xiu you hung it up as is, and with VC you trimmed? Did you do anything to the paper? It looks so nice and flat on the wall - how did you affix it? Did you use card stock or printer paper, or something else? Sorry for all the Qs, I'm excited about doing this.

I could be wrong, but the Urban Outfitters near where my partner works (Evanston, IL) seems to use Rasterbator for their window images.

I did it once. I would recommend you print the image with a border, then trim right inside the border. Printing without the border seems to cause the edge to line up funny (or maybe that was my poor trimming skills).

Here's a big version of Vice.

First, I printed the pdf off on my home printer, which isn't a good idea at all. I went through 2 black ink carts. I had to do that because for some reason both kinkos I went to couldn't print the pdf. Kept getting errors. Anyway, After I printed it, I took it up to kinkos and had them copy it onto pink paper.

Now putting it together.

First, the poster is actually in 3 seperate sections, divided vertically into two equal sections and the third that's smaller than the first two. I did that so It would be easier to create and work with, since I didn't have a lot of space. You can see the clear tacks I used hang it, to get a sense of the sections. I had to cut and tape together the three posterboard sections from several different sheets, since the width and height of the poster was different than that of the posterboard.

Next, I bought a paper cutter to trim the paper, cutting away all four edges. That's a bad idea though. What I should have done was trim only the left and top edge of each page, making it possible to just overlay the pages onto one another instead of just putting the edges up to each other. As you can see, if you don't do a PERFECT trim job, you'll get visible seams.

Once I trimmed each page I glued the paper to the posterboard using rubber cement. If you're using white paper, use spray adhesive instead - the glue on Xiu Xiu is visible through the poster.

All paper is regular stock, btw. Here's the page I made about it at the time, sans images. Here's the original image referenced on that page.

Someone gave me the idea to individually frame each page and hang them, which would be a cool effect if you wanted it. The next one I do will have to be wall sized tho.

I am so doing this. I'm going to hunt for a really good image to use. I can't wait! I 'll take of picture of it when it's done. Thanks for all of the help, p & c - especially the info about the glue. I have a really nice industrial-strength paper cutter at work, which is really going to come in handy. I think I'm going to frame the papers individually.

By the way, I didn't know you were bob sarabia from mf. I wondered what had happened to you.

This was in my office before I moved a few months ago. I haven't reassembled it yet.

The joy of repositionable adhesive is that you can line up the adjacent sheets and then trim them all at once. It takes a REALLY sharp blade, a long straight-edge and a steady hand (drinking moderately helps the steadiness.) And patience.

I use a "snap-point" knife and test each tip after snapping off the dull point. When you think about it, it's kinda amazing how rapidly paper wears away the hard steel edge.

I usually use several sheets of newspaper as the backing and then cut with just enough pressure to get into one or two of the newspaper sheets.

If the join is black, rubbing just the edge of the paper on a black Sharpie will keep the cut edges from showing. This is also a good trick for the edges of self-adhesive labels that are cut out from larger sheets. Cut into the bleed and blacken the edge. It really improves the looks.
