celebrities as kids Hee: Demi Moore
Wow, courtney love stayed almost completely the same for years and years. (that's not sarcastic, btw)

Demi is pretty good, but I like Bjork too.
posted by omiewise 30 August | 08:57
Mariah looks like a boy. Keanu looks like a girl.

Phil Collins looks like a toy soldier. : )

Robert de Niro looks supercool.

Tom Hanks looks exactly like the thing that I used to be scared was underneath my bed, when I was a kid.
posted by veedubya 30 August | 09:23
Tina Turner looks a little like the guy on SNL, whatever his name is.

Angelina Jolie started the lip collogen at an early age...
posted by eekacat 30 August | 09:31
Bjork looks exactly the same.
posted by gaspode 30 August | 09:54
yeah, spooky.

Bjork is on the list of things I don't "get," right after Japanimation and right before Arrested Development.

Are those Freddie Mercury's teeth?

Really jon, I can understand Bjork and Japanamation, but Arrested Development would seem to be right up your twisted alley. But it's ever thus, the things we love we cannot understand others not loving too. The things we don't get, seem strange and impenetrable, and it's unclear why anyone would like them.
posted by omiewise 30 August | 10:22
Sorry about that, I got a wierd error or something and didn't know what was going on, so I hit refresh. See what it gets you?

I tried watching, way too "cute," (and by cute I mean smug, arch, and stilted)for my taste. I hate being condescended to by my TV. Last night I watched Sanford & Son, Good Times, and All In The Family back to back. That's when TV was TV, dammit. All hail Norman Lear.

omiewise - i deleted the repeat comment

Wow, I find Arrested Development the exact opposite of condescending. It assumes a level of intelligence (lots of callbacks etc.) in the viewer that I find refreshing, and mostly missing on american tv.

and I think the Christina Aguilera pic is pretty cute.

No offense, gaspode, but that's not entertainment, that's flattery; it makes the audience feel good because they "get," the inside joke and superior to those that don't. I just prefer my humor more straightforward. The older I get, the less patience I have for writers getting "cute."

YMMV.

as for Bjork, I'm not saying she's bad, I've even enjoyed a few of her songs ("Human Behavior," "It's Oh So Quiet," and especially "Birthday," with the Sugarcubes. I just don't understand the wholesale adulation she gets from some people. She's not that good.

Likewise, I don't understand the wholesale loathing people hold for certain things (Chuck Klosterman, Kid Rock, Creed) that I see as fairly harmless. But that's just me, a man without a country. Poor me.

Kurt and Jimi are ready to rock.
posted by mcgraw 30 August | 10:38
Yep, jon, the sort of humor you describe there, I find condescending. I don't like my jokes to be spelled out for me. For some reason jokes that I have to take half a second to "get" I find a lot more rewarding. Family Guy is king of this.

True, but most people can still get it. Plus, Family Guy is not above pure, crass, obnoxious vulgarity. Which I still love.

I guess Bjork is like Kate Bush for the next generation but, while Kate will always have a corner of my heart, I just don't get the Bjork thing at all.

Actually I've met Bjork, but that's another story.

On the comedy front I must confess that Married With Children has become a bit of a guilty pleasure at Dodgy Mansions. It has a terrible reputation but it's actually pretty good once you get past the braying jackasses in the audience. Anyhoo....

It's brilliant, scathing (yet sympathetic or at least compassionate) satire in the Archie Bunker tradition. And Ed O'Neill is an underrated actor. I loved him in Dutch, caus ehe kind of reminded me of my Dad. "I'm not your mommy, I'm not your daddy, I'm not your grampy. I don't care whether you live, die or grow roses out your crack!"
posted by jonmc 30 August | 11:08
Double. Sort of. Maybe recursive or summat. Or I'm not getting this.

Whoo!

Can I even do this?
posted by bdave 30 August | 11:18
I don't like Family Guy, but I'm not much for recreational acrimony.

Ooooh it is a double! Bad gaspode!
posted by gaspode 30 August | 11:22
And Married with Children was one of the greatest shows of all time.

Woaahhh Bundy!

What are you doing on MeFi, then?

You hit the nail on the head, jonmc. I haven't been there since before I arrived here.

I feel like I'm about to retire from the Blue, too. I get more angry at missing the discussion here than if I miss any of the MeFi, and it's a lot harder to keep track of MeFi as well. I stopped doing AskMe months ago as it was just ridiculous.

At least I can make callouts here now ;)

Thanks, dodgy, that's my new desktop.

I'm hungry now.

The only time I feel like contributing there these days is when someone says something so obtuse that it can't go unanswered, so I shred. When I feel like being funny or having a pleasant conversation, I come here.

Dodgy's good at providing new desktops (I'm still giggling at the squirrel).

Leonardo was damn cute as a little boy. As an adult, he does nothing for me.

Um... you know what I mean.
posted by deborah 30 August | 14:15
Well, he does my dishes.

Dries 'em, too.

I worship at Bjork's feet.

Poor Demi, she looks horrible in that photo. And her childhood, from what I understand, was also horrible. I knew an aunt and uncle of hers, they were very close friends of my grandmother's.
