Randomiser II. We did this before, let's try it again. Fire up your MP3 player, set it to random and tell us the first five tracks it plays - no cheating and no skipping! I'll start us off again.
[More:]

Long Division - The Aislers Set
I have no idea where this came from. Maybe a Mecha mix? [hunts around] Yep, it's from iconomy's. I really should listen to these mixes more often.

Your Eyes - The Damned
One of the few bands I'll make sure of catching every time they play. Not one of their better tracks though - they sound hungover.

Chicken - Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster
Great Cramps style rock n' roll. Great live band too.

Toys Are Us - Hexstatic
OK, finally a track I instantly recognised. It's largely made up of samples of musical toys - you can hear it here. Not a bad track however I find Hexstatic's tunes always outstay their welcome.

Dalai Lama - Rammstein
Any band where the lead singer simulates sex with another member of the band with a strap on dildo can't be all bad. I'm glad they sing in German as well, I like the fact I have no clue what they're singing.

Again, this selection fits together quite well while being very different to the last selection I posted. Weird.
I'll play, even though some of these may be embarrassing...

1. "Driving My Life Away" - Eddie Rabbitt

2. "Looking for Love" - The Cars

3. "It's All Been Done" - Barenaked Ladies

4. "I Wish You Were A Beer" - Cycle Sluts from Hell

5. "Happy Hour" - The Housemartins

Okay, this was not as embarrassing as it had the potential to be. No Backstreet Boys/N'Sync/Britney Spears songs showed up. Not like I HAVE any songs by those artists on my Ipod, of course. ; )

Yes, I have very eclectic taste.

What a great way to start the morning! Here goes:

1. David Grisman w/ Edgar Meyer "Mando-Bass Boogie Sonata"

From mandolinist David Grisman's "Dawg Duos" album, where each track is a duet with a different instrument. This track is with double bass genius Edgar Meyer and is one of my favorites on the album. Even though he's accused of raping the estate of Jerry Garcia (cryptical i'm looking at you ;) ), I love Grisman for his musicianship and humor-the furtive Bill Monroe lick at near the end of this track cracks me up every time.

2. Squarepusher "Telluric Piece"

Short, atmospheric, spooky, forgetable.

3. The Allman Brothers Band "Les Brers in A Minor"

After a tedious, four minute long introduction, this is a pretty decent instrumental.

4. Maritime "James"

Maritime's "Glass Floor" album was given to me a few weeks ago by my old high school friend Preston. He and I see each other maybe once a year and when we do we usually spend most of the time catching up on what we're each listening to. He explained Maritime's backstory (something about ex-members of The Promise Ring, I don't really know) and honestly I wasn't too thrilled, but what could I say? The album surprised me though. It's breezy pop with acoustic guitars, soft vocals and horns. I find myself singing along...

5. The Roots "It Just Don't Stop"

A solid track off "Illadelph Halflife." I really want to be a Roots fan, I do. I buy the albums, read the reviews and respect their approach, but they just don't click with me like other hip-hop does. Oh well.

all right, but I have a ton of different folders... So I just chose the first most general one... and I'm not explaining.

smashmouth: walking on the sun

marcy playground: sex & candy

hank williams: I'm so lonesome I could cry

steve miller band: mercury blues

war: spill the wine

By the way, I think #7 deserves a special shoutout.

(but my husband would kill me if I didn't also explain that nobody in this house was responsible for the original recording of said clip)

1. "Love Comes in Spurts" by the Neon Boys (pre-Television Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine). Not to be confused with Richard Hell's "Love Comes in Spurts" from Blank Generation

2. "I've Got You Under My Skin" by Frank Sinatra, from Songs for Swingin' Lovers.

3. "The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side" by the Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs.

4. "Skit Closed, Windy..." by Melt-Banana, from Teeny Shiny. Your guess is as good as mine. A coworker filled up a few discs with MP3s for me, and this is one I haven't gotten to yet. Who the hell are these people?

5. "American Wheeze" by 16 Horsepower, from Olden.
posted by goatdog 27 August | 11:38
Ok, this will probably be embarrassing..

1. "Special" by Garbage. Not too bad so far!

2. Intermezzo in B Flat Minor, by Johannes Brahms.

3. "O wie selig seid ihr doch" - Chorale prelude for organ by Johannes Brahms. I'm starting to look nerdy here.

4. Pieces froides (Danses de travers) #1 by Erik Satie.

5. "Sahst du nach dem Gewitterregen den Wald" - Leid by Alban Berg.

Yep.. nerdy. :\

taz: "Spill the Wine" is a favorite of mine!

The Pretenders - Private Life
Oh how I wanted to grow up to be Chrissie Hynde when I was in junior high. Grew my bangs out, bought fingerless gloves and everything. This is off their first album, before any of the band members died and they still rocked and sang mostly about hot sex.

Girls Against Boys - AnotherDroneInMyHead
GvsB is one of those bands that has potential but just never quite hits it. Usually this can be traced to too much coke, and I'm betting that's the problem here too.

The Dandy Warhols - Little Drummer Boy
I spent a lot of time last year putting together a CD of holiday songs I'd actually enjoy listening to. This one didn't make the cut but it's off one of my best sources, the XFM album benefitting The Big Issue (which is a newspaper put out by the homeless in the UK). My finished CD was deemed "too depressing" by listeners.

Spoon - Stay Don't Go
I guess I do have a fair number of Spoon albums, they kind of creep into my collection when I'm not paying attention. It's good upbeat stuff to clean the house by I guess.

The Flaming Lips - The Process
This is one of those "I am a bigger fan than you, look what I have" tunes. It was on the UK version of the "She Don't Use Jelly" single back in 1995, but it actually sounds more like The Soft Bulletin (released in 1999 after their guitarist left and the sound changed dramatically). I'm a dork.

1. Devotchka: "The Jaws of the World". I think these guys are from Seattle. Really good eclectic rock with a Balkan feel.
2. Galaxie 500: "Blue Thunder". This is still one of the best albums ever made (On Fire).
3. Husky Rescue: "My World" (Country Falls). A really sweet mellow scandinavian pop album that came out this year.
4. Magnolia Electric Company: "The Dark Don't Hide It". This is the band that used to be known as Songs: Ohia. Dark indie recreation of classic southern country-rock.
5. The National: Daughters of the Soho Riots (Alligator). I'm still deciding whether I like this album that came out this year, but the first track "Secret Meeting" is a keeper.

Sounds like fun....

1. Red, Red, Red -- Fiona Apple (I really love that unreleased album)
2. Arms of a Woman -- Amos Lee (sort-of a local; a Philly fave)
3. Northern Sky -- Nick Drake (Honest, I first heard this guy on a movie soundtrack [this tune, on Serendipity] and I became a posthumous fan)
4. Eight More Miles -- Kieran Kane (From my mp3 blog-wandering. Alt-country? I'm not sure, but I like it)
5. No Mermaid -- Sinead Lohan (This is just such a cool song.)

posted by mmahaffie 27 August | 13:29
1. L'Aventure Fantastique (remix)--Fantastic Plastic Machine, from a "Future" swap mix from a mefite--
2. Rain Forest (original version)--Paul Hardcastle
3. Blue Blue Ocean--Echo and the Bunnymen (eh)
4. Dracula's Castle--New Order (from the latest album, but not a fav of mine)
5. Pennies from Heaven--The Skyliners

(6 is more of a fav: Something Inside So Strong--Flying Pickets) : >

1. Victory Lane by Komeda
From gramschmidt's mix (mixup 2)

2. Why you been gone so long by The Outlaws
From kortez's mix (mixup 2)

Hrrmm lappytop likes mixup 2

3. Break and Enter by The Prodigy
Aaahh yes, Music for the Jilted Generation. I used to be very into electronica in grad school. Late nights in the lab, it kept me awake.

4. Five Feet High and Rising by Johnny Cash.
Everyone has some Johnny Cash, right?

5. The Brain that Wouldn't Die by Hasslehoff Experiment.
A NZ band. Loud and fun.

So I went to see Les Savy Fav last night. Awesome. As were their supporting bands, particularly Thunderbirds are Now. Happy times!
posted by gaspode 27 August | 13:46
1. Ali, Plain Horsee and Rider, Little Darla Has a Treat for You, Vol. 2

2. Pharaos, Tears for Fears, Boy Milo's MeCha Mix

3. La Derives des continents, Bejamin Biolay, Negatif (Nouvelle Scene Francais stuff)

4. J'ai une pensee, M avec Celine, Le Pop en duo (more NSF)

5. Do the Bambi, Stereo Total, Do the Babmbi

Well, that's an odd collection of songs, I have to say. Definitely not representative. Then again, that's from my iTunes, and most of my music isn't on there, because it takes up too much space. I really want to cheat & do it again. But I won't.

1. East Flatbush Project - Tried by 12 [Squarepusher Mix] - (probably from some Ninja Tune compilation)
Superior intelligent vocal skittishness with added Squarepusher skwonkicity.

2. Anouar Brahem - Pique-Nique a Nagpur - Le Pas Du Chat Noir (ECM)
I also have his 'Astrakhan Cafe' on board, to which I listen a lot more often.

3. Enrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile

4. Liszt - Annees de Pelerinage, Deuxieme annee - Italie
I like solo classical pieces, particularly piano. Liszt is very dreamy.

5. Fernando Carulli - Duo in G - Guitar (played by John Williams and Julian Bream)
I also like classical/Latin guitar, and have a number of compilations.

This is probably a little more classical heavy than I would listen to - I rip a lot of mix cds as one track. I expected to see some Ninja Tune in there, but Bach was missing.

Gaspode: TAN! are a local band. I saw 'em open for Les Savvy Favs about a year ago, and dug 'em, though I've been really disappointed by every Favs album I've bought (they were so good live, and on record they're kinda eh...)

Rollercoaster (live): Spacemen 3: Sounds of Confusion

17 minutes long and damn, I wish I was high.

Saxophone Concerto: Raahsan Roland Kirk: Prepare Thyself to Deal With a Miracle

23 minutes long. Good thing I'm doing other stuff in another tab as I keep this open. Freak out militant afro jazz. Good, but too long for most mixes.

Bring Da Ruckus: Wu-Tang Clan: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

Do you think your Wu Tang sword style can defeat me? Bring tha motherfuckin' ruckus.

Anglo Girl Desire: Radio Birdman: The Essential Radio Birdman

This is one of the few Best Ofs that I own, but it's so good and so necessary. Kiwi pop meets Detroit garage rock (think of the rockin' cousins of The Clean).

Supernaut: 1000 Homo DJs: WaxTrax! Black Box vol. 1

I used to be a huge industrial fan, and remember begging my parents for this when it came out. I still like some of the songs on there, and this cover of a Sabbath song is pretty fucking awesome. And, since this is the Black Box, it's Trent Reznor singing (though I never got into NIN).

I'm only on #2 right now, but before I get there I just wanted to make a suggestion: It's lots of fun to read the song list and try to pick the user before getting to the username.

So far I pegged gaspode and agropyron, but that's it.

1) Gram Parsons: $1000 Wedding

2) Los Texas Tornadoes: Wasted Days, Wasted Nights

3) Lucinda Williams: 2 Kool 2 Be 4Gotten
(There's a line in the song that says "june bug versus hurricane." When I first got the Car Wheels album, I thought she was singing "Jim Bob versus hurricane," which was appropriate since it's a CD about the south. Anyway.)

4) Wilco: Theologians

5) Janis Joplin w/ Big Brother: Light is Faster Than Sound

I've been on a Do Make Say Think kick for a few weeks, so WinAmp is devoted entirely to them. If I shuffle there, I have:

1) Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
2) The Fare To Get There
3) Our Man In Havana
4) War On Want
5) White Light Of

If I shuffle in iTunes which is linked to several folders, I get:

1) Butterfly - Talvin Singh
2) No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age
3) All Night Long - Peter Murphy
4) My Attorney, Bernie - Blossom Dearie
5) Will She Come Back? - Cliff Martinez/'Solaris' Score

The iTunes mix reads like a trashy novel.

3. Assemblage 23 - Let Me Be Your Armor
4. X Marks The Pedwalk - Abattoir
5. City of God - Come What May

There's only one track in my playlist right now. It's a DJ mix I've called "The Phoenix" that I did last night. It's mellower and more accessible than most of my hard, crunchy techno-noise mixes.

Weretable: In winamp you can just drag folder after folder to the playlist (not browser/library window) and it'll automatically recurse each folder. Then you can save the playlist as a .pls or .m3u file for reloading. In iTunes you do menu: file: add folder to library. (You can do this without doing iTunes annoying "archive/library" function where it copies everything.

Spaniolated-The Fiery Furnaces: From my favorite album of 2004, Blueberry Boat.

Crazy Utahraptor-Joey and Gilyan: a piece of fan art for Dinosaur Comics. I like the vacuum sample rhythm. Hear it here.

Billy Connolly-Rangers V. Celtic: From a collection of out of print Billy Connolly albums that showed up on UKNova awhile ago. Something to do with Glaswegians and football. A bit culturally baffling. The Scots drink bovril at football matches do they? Sounds good actually...

Huh. Billy Connolly again. This time a bit called 101Masturbations. He just described someone as an "international fuckwit".

Billy Connolly again, this time a bit called Earthquakes. I need to make some playlists I think.

Bonus non-BC track: Moloko-Blow X Blow: quite good. Roisin Murphy's voice is just lovely.
