Google doesn't seem to be supporting the conference or groupchat features of Jabber at this point, so if you want to talk with everyone at once, it's still IRC time.

Aha! I had an invite from a friend waiting for me when I got home and set it up just in time to read this. It looks fairly straightforward, though I haven't tried it out extensively yet.

As far as I can see at the moment it won't be a replacement for irc... it's just an instant messenger kind of thingy (but maybe with audio? I haven't tried that out... and I don't know if I want to...), but since I haven't done any kind of instant messenger before, I can't say how it's better. I would like to hear from everybody else. I did just chat with one person, and it was cool and easy... so it seems kind of nice.

- on preview, adding you, skrik. I'm "razzmataz" at the same address, by the way.

I'm ferneyes at you know what but I haven't installed any Google Talk yet and I don't have a mike ruffone. And I also have gmail accounts to give out if anyone on the planet doesn't already have one.

I don't have a mike ruffone either... but you can use it just like AIM, etc. (And it installs really quickly and easily, matildaben.)

I'd really like to see multiple users all together, at least for the texting. That's not possible now, right? (Obviously, I haven't figured the whole thing out yet...)

taz - I installed Adium and tried to set up a Group Chat with invitations, but no luck. After clicking Join the dialog box disappeared without a chat window appearing. Mac+OSX.
