I think it's pretty clear for everybody that by selling MetaFilter Matt can only sell the domain name and little else. it's an empty box really, unless all its current users choose to stay under a new owner and new moderators
the SuicideGirls ad fiasco is a clear example of that
He's been offered money for the site, apparently, and he's hinted that he won't be running the place forever and ever.
Still, the counterxample of that article is that the WELL actually was sold. More than once. And here we are, 15ish years on, and it's still got that cachet.
