G-D J-Run Damn I'm too tired for this. I'm going to bed - so here's my jrunned comment on
Romare Bearden. I'm damned if I'm wasting it. Rat fink effin jruns, grr, christ, grrrrrrrr.
→[More:]I love Bearden and I don't think he's redoing dada collages at all. His work is a lot closer to late Matisse than to
classic cubist collage. The Dada/20s collagists were looking for juxtaposition and images as images - a picture of a crow from a magazine is used as a crow, words are used as words, etc. Bearden and Matisse were taking the ubiquitous trash images around us and creating an entire new thing - using color and shape, not the content. There's a long history of African-American collage art which goes into textiles and more but Bearden was the master. I keep this
postcard by my desk to remind me how to recycle and re-look at things.
Check out
Ezra Jack Keats' work for some more really brilliant African-American collage art.
