You are in luck, I am not in luck... Look what God did to us man...
So for my many sins, omitted, committed and sundry, God and Apple computer have taken away my 7 plus years of MP3's, wiping out that corksucking drive and then to really twist the knife, my Ipod. I have restored the Ipod to a pristine state, 18 gigs.

'Zo, tell me something to fill it with. I like almost everything except Techno (electronic is fine) and hiphop recorded after 1997 (unless it's really really good backpacker stuff). I am getting back what I consider the essentials so what I am really looking for is something new. And thanks, and don't feel bad for me, I bounce back like a spalldeen. (oh special points for good ass salsa and other latin business, but not the tacky tecky 800 BPM yelling spanish gibberish Dominican in a '93 Maxima kind.)

nelson sargento - sonho de um sambista
mississippi john hurt - avalon blues
dave godin's deep soul vol. 1
60 ft. dolls - joya magica
gang starr - moment of truth
legacy: a tribute to the first generation of bluegrass
fabulous cadillacs - fabulosos calaveras
mando diao - hurricane bar
the unband - retarder

Not all new, but maybe some new to you. These are albums; I don't how to send music filez. All are worth it.

By the way, who is Alonzo?
posted by Hugh Janus 28 July | 12:49
Oh no, Brilliant Hugh. When is that Gang Starr from? I don't know who Alonzo is? Why?

Ethylene:

Probably we should both be put on speak and spells.

this means i'm never gonna sell my 2xl?
what about those 8 tracks?
it wasn't just us, either, but i at least didn't have a full blown crash
i'd send some files but i have to get ready for a dubious "lunch meeting"

How New is New? I'm looking at a long list and thinking "he probably has that." I'll err on the cautious side, but is new anything after 2000 or only this year's albums? Or, can I go back to the 90s somewhere?
posted by safetyfork 28 July | 12:59
I don't want to go back to the 90s but I will if you need me to.

* was miserable for a long stretch there *

a) 1998
b) & c) It was a reference to your use of "'Zo," a nickname for NBA star Alonzo Mourning, among others. Goofy, lame joke. Just me disappearing into my own... er... name.

Whoa, the hard drive and the iPod? Wha? How? I assume you were updating at the Time of Death. And I thought OSX was supposed to be steadfast, robust and immutable. What happened? Espresso spill?

safetyfork:

This is the best part, I don't have anything! So whatever, at the least I will be grateful and at the most you will have put me on and I will be grateful.

Hugh:
I was gonna make a joke about Alonzo Morning, so fucking hell. I had a dream about Mugsy Bogues last week.

gramschmidt:

Was a slave drive that I installed myself, it died, due to hardware lameness. Wasn't on the backup schedule at work cause it was my personal drive. Then I updated to Mac OS 10.4, which was rocky like backwoods driving in Maui. Then some fucking ipod update fried my ipod somehow. Mercury was in full retrograde yesterday at the office and I had reverse golden ass, everything I touched turned to expensive plastic doorstops. Today however I am magic.

God killed our television last night, too, plus mr. taz's computer is clunking out, and iconomy's missing, so I think her computer's crashed again, and I know me3dia lost some data from his hard drive... it must be the end of days!

*casts a 'come hither' look towards Hugh, if only to gain access to his music collection*

And, fully exposing my lack of Mac literacy to the group at large, can an Apple read PC burned discs? (This is directed to D_W as well as the group.)

I got fuckloads of good Latin Stuff man - Joe Bataan, Mongo Santamaria (& his son Monguito), Tito Puente, Willie Bobo. I'll have to yousendit some of it later.

Ozomatli is great latin/hip hop/klezmer fusion. Best live, but good on record too. I've got the first two albums, which I can vouch for, but not the latest one, so I can't vouch for it.
posted by omiewise 28 July | 13:40
'Hectually they can read data discs as well. I was meaning to check out Ozomatli, there we go. Thankee all.

Jon, I'ma have to make a trip to queens with a hard drive and rob your ass.

posted by Divine_Wino 28 July | 13:51
When's the next Queens meetup scheduled? I'd like to show my face one of these days. I can do other boroughs as well.
posted by Hugh Janus 28 July | 14:00
Any time you want, dude. Bring beer. I have a PC, not a Mac though.
posted by jonmc 28 July | 14:08
'Sallright about the pc, beer of course. Hugh we have yet to have a formal queens meetup, but I don't see why that can't be arranged.

posted by Divine_Wino 28 July | 14:12
Unfortunately I can't offer anything that will get special points, but it looks like you are making progress in that direction (which is good for me, because I poach other people's music request threads often). Pardon any spelling errors, I have got to run!
---
I used some criteria because I didn't want to list just what I felt like promoting today, but things that I've marked in my own iTunes as having a least half of the songs be 5 star rated, which I'm pretty critical with, then I used 1998 (Hugh's answer) as my mental target for cut off (which means there's probably at least two or three major violations of my cut-off below). The list would be even longer if I hadn't just purged my iTunes recently to make room on the HD. I guess that's a good thing, though since it makes this a more selective list i.e. these all survived an approximately 10GB pruning.

Afghan Whigs - Congregation: It's my favorite Whigs album, dark with a touch of blues, but still of its time (this came out in 91! see I think 98 and I get you 91: thank my bad memory).
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings: One of the best sounding metal albums in recent years. Nice touches of Motorheadishness.
Mastodon - Leviathan: another great recent metal album, in fact, this and Blessed Black Wings have pretty much been my metal fix lately (true, I don't need much).
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice & Audit in Progress: Ah, they're calling it quits, but they are so good. You should catch they're last show in early Aug if it hasn't sold out yet. Great Punk Rock with touches of garage and some mathisms appropriate to their Drive Like Jehu heritage.
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People: Fantastic pop album, with some horns, excellent lyrics and lo-fi production flourishes.
Built to Spill - Live. Excellent sampler of their material with a blistering cover of Neil Young's Cortez the killer on it.
Cat Power - You are Free & Covers Record: She breaks my heart.
Constantines - Shine a Light: From Toronto. They have a new album coming out this October. This one still sounds good.
Ex Models - Zoo Psychology: No-Wave in a modern blender.
The Ex - Turn: I love my anarchist, dutch punks recorded by albini. This is a double album.
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is: Crazy, spastic instrumental music, Guitar and drums. Oh the drums!
Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow: Crazy, spastic, dirty noise instrumental music, bass and drums. Oh, my ears! Fantastic live, this is my favorite on disc.
Low - Trust: Matildaben and I disagree. I think, this is their best work to date. We can get along though. :)
Fugazi - Instrument: Excellent album from an excellent band. I love their evolution and since this is the most recent....
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey: I'm running out of time... Ok. Welch gets me in the heart.
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Yanqui U.X.O: Quiet. Loud. Bombast. Rock. Not Rock. Instrumental.
Liars - They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top: It's possible this album won't age well, no wave action with a solid rhythm section.
Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas: Snotty, cheerleader brat punk. Or something like that. I very much like this album of theirs.
Old Crow Medicine Show - O.C.M.S.: Is it you that likes them? I think so. If not it was H.J.
Quasi - Hot Shit: Great songs from Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. Sam's lyrics are fantastic.
Refused - Shape of Punk to Come: Ah, if that were so. Unfortunately, it seems the shape of punk to come is mtv.
Shellac - At Action Park & 1000 Hurts: yeah, it's no Big Black, but it's good.
Shipping News - Flies the Fileds: Great album from ex-rodan, june of 44, rachels, etc. i.e. Chicago meets Louisville.
Silkworm - Firewater (1996, it's close!) & Italian Platinum: Songs about alcohol, bitterness, loss, etc. The guitar work on Firewater is excellent if you listen for that kind of thing.
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat & The Woods: A great band, getting better. The Woods has a bit of the Who going on if you ask me.
Wilco - A Ghost is Born & Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: jim o'rourke took this band to a whole new level and they were already good!
The Evens - The Evens: new Ian MacKaye band, a two piece with an almost folky feel, but he still hates the Man. In heavy rotation lately.
Bellini - Snowing Sun: What if Uzeda crossed with Don Caballero? They did and they made this album.

Well, if we're going to do the beer garden, I would vote for September: cool enough but not too cold. Or is it a meetup only for people from the borough of Big Hair?
posted by dame 28 July | 14:49
yes! because i may be visiting!
and then we go en mass to the daily show!
and my meeting just got bumped an hour!

I am currently from the borough of knobby knees and skelly, so Brooklyn must be in the house. Sometime in september at the damn beer garden is a good ass idear.

D_W, it does my heart good knowing that you live so close to jonmc's vast music collection. I'm sure he'll get you right sorted.

This song isn't anywhere close to new, but it is Crazy Fun: 'Footsee' by 'Wigan's Chosen Few.' Go here for the download:

ethylene, keep watching that 'pass the cat' site-- new stuff is posted fairly often.

dame, believe it or not, one day at work I read an article about some park in Brooklyn where people dress their dogs in outlandishly fancy little outfits. The very next day I was walking around Astoria, and a guy was walking his basset hound, which was wearing a sleeveless white t-shirt. I shit you not. He shoulda put a pack of off-brand smokes on the dog and gelled his fur, too.

Quizzens reprazent!

also to make up for fuzzy monster's well meaning faux pas: here's one of my fave mp3 blogs.
posted by jonmc 28 July | 15:27
s'okay, fuzzy, the other sites it links to have some gems as well but a lot missing links
so is the way it goes, just wanted to give a heads up
[still recovering from many an old crash in a lot of ways as well]

D_W: We have some spare bandwidth from the last mix swap so if you want to download almost two gigs of tunes then e-mail me and I'll sort you out.

eth, sadly I don't think I can do mecha mix swaps, whereas I can still put discs in the mail (hint).

Queens, beer garden in (early to mid) september: yes.
